Volkswagen Golf (2013 - 2020)
1.4TSI GT DSG 5 door
A good car let down by disappointing faults and poor dealer service
The car itself is practical, comfortable and drives well. The engine is a fantastic combination of performance and economy although the official mpg figures are hopelessly optimistic. The DSG gear box is truly superb. The styling is slightly anodyne but it is also quite a timeless design. Cabin touch point quality is good but not outstanding, rear space is very good and the boot is a good size. One slip is that the boot has a movable floor but there is no floor over the spare wheel space so you do not have the hidden compartment below the boot floor in the higher position that other cars offer. Nor do you get much in the way of boot tidies, hooks etc.
So far so good however for a car which bases much of its appeal on a reputation for quality and premium brand image the build quality has been disappointing and the dealer service worse. The air-con died and the dealer immediately went on the attack blaming me for not doing a two year air-con service which is not in the service book or highlighted in the owners manual. They threatened to charge £138/hr to fault find if they decided it was due to not doing this service despite never having recommended this service when booking the cars services and despite it being absent from the service book. Also booking a service without living your life around the dealers hours proved to be painful. The ACC sensor is susceptible to damage and the cooling system is not really protected from foreign body ingress leading to it being quite easy to damage.
Given the premium price I've found the whole ownership experience disappointing and despite being a good car do not think the car deserves its reputation for quality.
