Volkswagen Golf (2013 - 2020)
BlueMotion 1.6 TDI 5dr Hatchback
The claimed fuel economy figures are not to be believed, the gear ratios are badly set up which makes for a gutless driving experience.
I opted for the new Golf Blue Motion 1.6TDi as a replacement for a Mini Cooper 1.6D in the hope of retaining frugal fuel economy and getting a bit more cabin space. This proved to be a big mistake as the Golf Blue Motion 1.6TDi does not live up to its claimed MPG figures even with light footed driving. Where my Mini Cooper Diesel always returned 60+mpg with spritley acceleration on tap in all gears the Golf is only returning 52mpg and is very sluggish with the gear ratios set too high for normal mixed driving. The lack of a normal handbrake is irritating and be warned that the hill hold function only works when the drivers seat belt is plugged in so make sure that you are belted up if conducting a hillside parking manoeuvre or the Golf will be rolling away. Other niggles are that the CD and SD card inputs for the stereo are shoved inaccessibly inside the top of the glove box.
