Volkswagen Golf (2013 - 2020)
1.4 TSI 125ps 6speed S MK7 5dr Hatchback
Comfortable and great economy
I use this car for both short and long journeys - from supermarket trips to long distance runs down to Switzerland. It's proved to be practical and comfortable. On a long trip to Switzerland cruising at around 65 mph I managed an incredible 58.2 mpg (based on how much I had to refill the tank) and got to the hotel on one tank.
The S trim is a bit spartan though and the cloth on the seats isn't of the highest quality and do stain easily - so I would recommend putting an appropriate fabric protector on.
Handling is fine although not quite as much fun as my previous car - a Ford focus
Despite all their recent troubles VW do produce good cars and certainly know how to engineer fine petrol engines. I'd certainly buy another - but with a higher trim. It'll be interesting to see how their new 1.5TSI engine performs when released.
Update December 2017. She's still performing well with no major problems having just had her 50k service. I usually change cars every 3 - 4 years but I'm going to hold on to her for another couple of years and then see what the new MK VIII is like or perhaps even switch to electric if battery technology has progressed sufficiently.
