Volkswagen Golf (2009 - 2013)
GT 2.0 TDI 5dr
Simply brilliant.
Bought as a one owner vehicle with 58k miles and a FVWSH. I paid £6495.
Needed a few repairs initially but the 1yr fully comprehensive warranty covered those repairs fully thankfully.
Transports 4 in comfort. It feels bomb proof and the attention to detail is excellent. Even the glove box is fabric lined and the opening mechanism is dampened. Plenty of power. Driven carefully on the motorway the computer regularly shows 65mpg (although how accurate that is I never know). Town mpg more like 45.
Insurance is reasonable, even in a city.
Servicing reasonable as long as you don't use a main dealer.
I've owned it almost 3 years and it's been reliable.
Decent size boot.
Decent tyres are reasonably priced (£90-120) and need to be. Only complaint is that with heavy 2.0 diesel unit under bonnet it chews tyres. Put a set on Dunlop's on and they needed changing after 7000 miles. Replaced with Goodyear's which are doing better.
Try changing to another brand once you've owned a golf. This car is so well finished inside and so comfortable it is really hard when you try a different brand. I owned a Peugeot before this and the quality difference between the two is enormous. I almost replaced with a 2015 Honda civic, but I disliked the seating position and the quality of the Honda interior was good but nothing like the golf.
Finally it'll hold its value. Last week AutoTrader was suggesting I could sell privately with a starting price of £4800 for a 12yr old car with 82k miles.
If you want a good all-rounder I can recommend a Golf. Next time I'll probably try a 1.4 petrol or 1.6 diesel golf as both are more than ample for my needs.
