Volkswagen Golf (2009 - 2013)
VW 1.6 TDi Bluemotion 5 door
Money pit
If you do buy a VW from new, the best policy is to trade it in after the three year service warranty runs out. Every time my car goes in for a service or for work to be done, something goes wrong shortly after.
This Summer, I have had a minor service, MoT, cam belt change (and water pump recommended) and an air con service. Total: £673.30. In September the auxiliary belt tensioner fell off due to a sheared bolt. Replaced free of charge - fair enough but why did the thing break? Now the air con has packed up: Cost quote £700 for parts, £600 for fitting. This together with an intermittent engine management fault (£60 every time they plug their lap top in) makes what I always used to think was a solid reliable brand into a money pit that I hate to look at in the mornings. I have had three Golfs and the other two were great to the last mile you could expect from them. This one is a nail!
Second hand buyers beware.
