Ford Focus (2004 - 2007)
LX 1.8 TDCi 5dr Hatchback
I never thought I would enjoy a Ford!
But this one is SUPERB. I bought it as a "sensible" choice - had debated getting a more expensive and newer beast, but simply couldn't think of anything I really liked the look of.
The overall feel and sense of build quality is very very solid - a different world from the Fords of my youth. Extremely comfortable driving position, and heaps of well thought out space.
The real revelation is in the car's road manners - it feels utterly solid and planted, yet responsive and involving. Whether you are pootling along playing "max the mpg" or pressing on on twisty roads, it brings a smile to one's face and makes driving fun. On the motorway, it's relaxing and steady - although I guess one wouldn't want to cruise at more than about 85 or 90. But who does that anyway these days?
Any negatives? Well, the engine feels a bit tractory on start-up and it would be nice if the torque didn't fall off a cliff at 1300rpm. Sound-proofing is acceptable rather than amazing and I suspect I will do well to beat 42mpg in everyday use.
Overall, a real delight.
