Ford Focus (2004 - 2007)
Titanium 1.8 TDCi 5dr Hatchback
Mixed feelings
Bought this car approx 18 months ago, loved the looks and all the goodies that go with the titanium badge, privacy glass, auto lights/wipers etc etc. Car had around 111k miles on when I got it, and low and behold, not long after, the flywheel started showing signs of giving up, so ordered a new clutch/flywheel and concentric slave cylinder and got to work. Was quite suprised to see the original clutch in there, so I suppose I can't complain. Knowing my way around a car saved me quite a few £££'s here, but parts alone still up past £400. Next to let go was the alternator, £100 due to discount, but an absolute pain to fit, very very tight for space. Glow plugs also needed replacing, but before finding out what this was, it got into the habit of throwing the 'engine system fault light' on, and this took some diagnostic work to pinpoint the problem.
Other than the above mentioned problems, (all which could be put down to wear and tear) the car has been fine. Chose the 1.8tdci due to the fact it has NO DPF, which was a huge plus for me. This is the only engine which is fords own, and the block itself is old school, dating back years, so it is certainly the least refined of the engines, but in my opinion, its the strongest and most reliable. On a run it will happily return over 60mpg if driven sensibly. All in all, a nice car to drive, smooth and nippy, if a tad noisy, but nothing bad.
