Got told off! - Fence fell on car.. - oldroverboy.

A neighbour (yes it is "interesting" where we live) is having a wall built where there was previously a hedge. Hedge removed and trench dug and concreted. Used some 7 feet tall crowd control mesh barriers such as you see around buiding sites.

In the wind last week, the barriers fell and hit another neighbours car, leaving a deep gouge on the rear wing. Told other neighbor who phoned said neighbour and fence put up and secured. I said to neighbour that the fence had caused damage to a car and he said down to builder, but get car owner to get in touch.

One week on, nobody had told car owner of damage (owned up to it).

Mentioned it to car owner last night andnot a happy bunny. "son of a b*****." .. as does not get on with other neighbour. neighbour whose fence fell over now angry with me.

My reply.. well if it was your car damaged would you prefer me not to tell you?

Harumphh!!!

It depends - what happens if it happened to you and your neighbour saw it? I suspect they once this oik thought that they 'got away with it' once, they'd do other things that peed not just one neighbour off, but others too, like loud music, late night parties, ete etc. Of if you give them an inch, they'll take a foot, as the saying goes. Of course, 'intervening' sometimes can land you in intesive care with a knife or gunshot wound, especially nowadays.

Sadly, bad neighbours seem to be on the increase in the UK. Just read earlier that London has had more murders so far this year than NYC. Great times we live in, eh?

Sounds like a typical (almost) everyday story of neighbourly life. But then so does Skidpan's reply, somehow.

2 years ago we decided to have a new fence built to cover the neighbours rather knackered fence which would not have kept our dog in our garden. The neighbour was more than happy about this so we went ahead and arranged it. When the contractor arrived the neighbour went ape and called the council planners. They told me I could do exactly what I planned providing it was no higher than 2 meters, when I asked for confirmation they told me it was covered under planning law and they did not provide any confirmation. Considering the neighbours attitude I was concerned about doing the work and asked for any alternatives, they suggested that I apply to install a higher fence which I did. The neigbour went double ape when he got the letter from the council telling him I was proposing a higher fence than originally planned and he was going to stop me by any meams possible. The council approved a 2.2 metre high fence as I had applied for (2.4 meters on the neighbours side) and he realised he was stuck with it.

They don't live there now and we have a nice fence.

ORB: Good for you, I think you did the right thing. The neighbour is in the wrong.

Let's get this straight....

You told the neighbour (having the work done) who said that you should get the neighbour (who owned the damaged car) to get in touch .... yet when you did that the neighbour (having the work done) is now unhappy with you for doing so...

well he did agree that you should get them to get in touch .... seems someone changes what they want as frequently as the wind changes direction.

All being said, it is a difficult matter, the "right" thing is to tell the owner of the damaged car, but to do so at the possble expense of a good neighbourly relationship might be creating a long term problem that in time you might regret.

Of course that would not be a problem if the guilt and expense fell to the builder to make good, builders should be insured ... probably the best long term solution for you.
