Mechanical faults in my Volvo XC60

My Dad has been having horrendous trouble with his Volvo XC60. He purchased it from new in June 2011. Since then it has spent many, many weeks back at Volvo. The computer system fails in part - taking out his navigation system, the parking sensors, the radio and the blue tooth phone system.

Volvo have tried repeatedly to update the system - but each time they deliver the car back it fails again within days (or at times on the same day). They currently have the car and have had it since December 17th. Obviously at the moment the car is under a warranty system, but Dad is worried about what happens when that expires.

He has contacted Volvo head office UK - and been told that they won't help at all with regard to refunding him or purchasing a newer one. He has now lost faith in the car - a shame because he like it when it works. Does he have legal rights in this issue?

What would be his best way to sort this out, short of selling it privately as he would loose thousands of pounds taking this option. (He's now in his 70's and doesn't have thousands of pounds to loose!). He needed the XC60 for it's body weight, so he could tow his caravan. Any help would be appreciated.

These are his rights: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/ His remedy is against the supplying dealer, not against Volvo. But to sue would involve a full county court hearing and could cost him £15k in legal and court fees with no guarantee of success.
