  I've had a few cars with standard automatic gearbox.  Some of them will hold the car still on a hill at idle, but other's won't. Examples: Mercedes W202 2.4 V6 holds, Jaguar S-Type 3.0 v6 holds, Honda CRV 2.0 I4 rolls back. With the cars that hold, it's not a mechnical holding
