  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.6 EML on after plug change 23 Jan 2009 (Forum)
. The problem is that when I started the car up it ran 'lumpy' and the engine management light flashed on and off and the car was severely underpowered. On return home I managed to remove the last plug and replace with new (this makes a full set replaced). The car runs superb now but the engine management light

  • Renault Megane (1996 - 1998) - 1996 1.4 (8v) Cutting out (again) 12 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Further to my previous post in August - see http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=4&t=65855 - it's happened again. After the August post, it had a new CPS despite no fults showing, and the garage could find nothing wrong as it was running OK when it went to them. The most recent
  • Volkswagen Lupo (1999 - 2004) - 03 1.4 Misfiring when cold 4 Dec 2008 (Forum)
My Lupo misfires under steady running (e.g. at a steady 30mph) when it is cold, but is OK once warmed up (petrol engine). My garage said it was the MAP sensor and but replacing this didn't cure the problem. I have seen some info on the web indicating that this fault can be caused by failure

  • Honda Accord UK (1998 - 2003) - 02 2.0 misfiring on start up 6 Oct 2008 (Forum)
My wife's car bought used in June, auto, Vtec 60k miles. After a few weeks of ownership, started misfiring badly when starting from cold then usually runs okay. One occasion it was almost undriveable and she smelled burning. Ended up having to have the rear brake discs and pads replaced (don't know
  • Every cloud.... fuel prices. 2 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I'm struck by the number of surveys, statistics & anecdotals showing people adapting to rising fuel prices by using their vehicles less frequently and/or driving them more efficiently when they do. The latest surprising statistic is that the 'school run' is losing favour - apparently more kids
  • Honda - 99 135cc GCV135/160 mower engine problem ? 24 Sep 2008 (Forum)
starts first pull and appears to run perfectly though every now and then the revs die and it pops and bangs, spitting back through the carburettor, if it is immediately put back to idle it can be caught before it cuts out completely. Then if throttle is applied it with pop and spit unless left to idle
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.9GTTDI Battery/Alternator? 14 Sep 2008 (Forum)
is a dangerous thing. When I check the car battery in the morning after an overnight stand it reads 12.1 V or thereabouts, with car running after a few mins levels out at 13.9V. A little bit of reading on the web tells me a fully charged battery should read more than 12.1 V and I should be getting over 14V

  • Need advice buying a car 5 Aug 2008 (Forum)
things I do want in a car, have an amount, but not sure what I need to avoid that will cost me long term (ie parts etc). So I have approx 3.5K to spend, need something with 4 doors, not high insurance, not a massive engine that will cost a small fortune to run, something that isn't expensive parts wise
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2005 2.0 diesel - engine fault 2 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I really need some help from people who know about Ford Mondeo diesel engines. I have a 2005 Mondeo on which the warranty runs out in March. The car has had a new fuel pump under warranty. Sometimes the car still runs badly and goes into limp mode. The car has been at the dealer and they have tried
  • Used diesels on veggie oil..buy or not? 7 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Last day of my fortnight off...aaah... its been lovely, and been having a browse over some of my favourite forums. I've got funny ideas as some of you have probably already guessed, and losing the plot as well yes i do know. Well i'm amazed at the amount of people who are prepared to risk running
  • MPG - what to believe and what to buy? 28 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Possibly looking at changing my Megane 225 for something more economical to run and insure/tax as I am likely to be increasing monthly mileage quite a lot from about 200 to around 700 miles a month just commuting. I always owned the 225 on the basis of lowish mileage and mainly a 'fun' car. If I
  • BMW 3 Series Touring 3 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I have always liked the look of these, rather than the normal coupe/saloon version. However, I don't really know much about them and would value any advice. My intention would be to run one for 3-5 years / 50-75k miles. I would be spending around 6K. Are they a reasonable prospect at this price
  • Oil Contamination Problem-Renault Scenic 16 Mar 2007 (Forum)
and the head twice ( I have changed the head, to make sure there was no internal crack in the head). Although it is not as bad as it first was, I am still getting oil contamination into the header tank, but only at full running temperature and only after half an hour of running. I asked an old mate at Renault
  • Peugeot 406 diesel - mass air flow meter 22 Feb 2007 (Forum)
an unknown quanitiy. At the moment the car is running ok but but I do get the impression of a lack of pick up as I accelerate. I also feel that I could probably run it as it is for a while but ultimately could damage the turbo etc The manual doesn't give too much info on the mass air flow meter but from
  • Vauxhall Astra - ECU orange light 12 Feb 2007 (Forum)
with the engine running. The engine is quite 'chuggy' at idle and seems prone towards running hot (fan cutting in more often even with January temps). The engine starts fine and there is no noticeable loss of power. I have heard horror stories of dealers reading fault codes and then causing the customer to spend
  • Daytime Running Lights 1 Jan 2007 (Forum)
It's definately going to happen I think. I agree, it's another step towards removal of human decision-making. I usually turn mine on on twisty country...
