hi all ....
i've had a renault clio I RT auto 94 for 7 months...
after driving a frontera 2.2 lwb for the past 8 years .....wow its cheap to run....
well it was, its gone from about 40mpg to under 20mpg if im gentle....
its running normally....
i did the usual checks, all connections, plugs, leads...
i took the air filter off and ran it, i can see lots of fuel coming from the single injector into the throttle body, i know visually there is too much fuel going in but i dont know the cause..
i'm told the lambda sensor would cause this but im not sure if im testing it right, putting the multi-meter probes into the terminals on the multi connector what readings should i get....
what else should i be testing ?...
i'll say thanks in advance for any help and advice i get ....

As usual with the French; there are a lot of different versions on that year.
If you have a single-wire oxygen sensor; then it should be reading between 0.1-0.9 volts in a constant sweep when hot. If the mixture is rich; then it will be stuck high.
Far more likely to be a failed coolant temp sensor. Across it's two pins, disconnected, should read around 3000 Ohms cold and 300 hot.

hi ya and thanks for the quick reply...
its the 3 wire type...
am i testing it right by putting the probes down the holes in the multi plug where the wire goes in???
i'll try the coolant sensor..
i'll post the result....

On a multi-wire type; test the black wire from the sensor - connected. You may need to back-pin the connector.
The engine code would help.

hi ya .....its the E7J engine C57B model not sure what auto box....
i just went to check the coolant sensor, now i'm confused....
there are 2 sensors to the left of the dizzy cap what 1 is it .....
i checked both across the 2 pins and got no readings from either ???????
soz but i'm working without a manual .....

E7J - ??? Siemens/Bosch/Bendix?
Was one of them a white plug? I think one is an over-temperature light and the other the ECU's sensor.
|
the injection is bosch single point.....
where is the coolant temperature sensor located.....
..... cheerz.....AL.....
|
There are six different E7J engine codes on that year; [601 - 710 - 719??] but it should be on the water elbow on the engine, immediately back from the cooling fan.
|
what is on the elbow the engine code or the sensor.....i'll look for the code 2morro
i'll be working on it in the morning ....coz i'm off to work now(work nights)....
thanks very much for all ya help so far.....

hi ya and good morning ....
had a look on the oval plate could my mod be 720
i had a look for the sensor on the elbow ...no sensor....i took it to mean the elbow in the rubber hose in front of the thermo housing
but there is a sensor in the block by No1 cyl but it has 1 wire with a brown(i think) connector i thought this is the temp gauge sender..... i do have access to diaolgys today but dont know how to use it ........

hi ya tested the white sensor next to the dizzy ....took it off and cleaned it, it was very built up .....put a multi-meter on it cold 3k+ohms then in some hot water resistance went down to 400 ohms...so i presume its ok ...was i testing the right sensor?
there are 4 sensors on the engine i can see.....2 by the dizzy,,,1 in the block under the exhaust manifold with 1 wire (temp sender to gauge presumably)....and 1 in the block under the inlet manifold...i think it may be time to get a haynes ....does anybody know if it has the sensor test info in it .....MANY THANKS.....AL........
ps ....my heater doesnt work its cold, i read they get scaled up .....i have my hose off and have put descaler into the heater matrix.....i'll post seperatly if it works....AL....
|
Those resistance figures sound OK.
I haven't got an E7J 720 listed.
|
hi ya ....i got that number from the oval shaped plate next to the vin plate...
where should i be looking for the right numbers....?
is there anything else i can test...
i spoke to a friend about getting a diagnostic done on the car at the garage he works for they said they wouldnt see anything cause it hasnt gone into fault...where do i go from here....CHEERZ.....AL.....
|
One thing that you could do is make sure that it's not running too cold.
|
hi all ...
i took out the coolent temp sensor and cleaned it .... when i first checked it i got no reading with the meter ..... 100% resistance....i cleaned the contacts and got a reading ...
i put it back on the car and run it ..i looked in the throttle body and there is less fuel going in now....the amount that was going in before while idling was the same as when you accelerate heavily ....only time will tell...i'll post back in a day or so when i've done a few miles......AL........
|
hi all ...here's an update ....
after checking out all the sensors and finding they're all ok i thought the worst and was looking to try testing the injector....i took the car for an MOT and they found 2 leaks in the exhaust at joints they sorted them and W.T.F...!!!!!!!....the fuel economy is back to normal i think ......i have only used the car once and it seems ok ,,,,also i fitted a new thermostat and i'm sure that would help........
also i've been using some de-scaler on the heater matrix and i have a little more heat in the car ....i did it twice and back-flushed it ....looking good......i'll keep ya posted....AL........

Any air leak into the exhaust will fool the oxygen sensor into telling the ECU that the engine is running too lean.
Did you ever get a reading off the black wire?
|
hi ya screwloose thanks for ya help with my probs....
yes i did get readings i cant remember off hand what they were i was more interested that it was pulsing/switching....i was able to use my multi meter it does freq and was quick enough to read the voltages hi and lo..... the fuel comsumption is deffo better.....just gotta wait for the figures ......CHEERZ.....AL.....
