  • Learning more about cars 29 May 2011 (Forum)
basic maintenance on my own car (y'know; bulbs, oil, water, changing a wheel, tyre care, jump start). However, I couldn't open a car up and fix something - admittedly most cars have everything sealed in nowadays so you can't fiddle with it, and there's so much electronic wizardry in there as well

had an alternator changed last week. Two days later I received a "STOP" coolant warning so I got my car recovered to the garage. The coolant was completely empty and we found that the coolant hose at the bottom of the engine was disconnected, not sure for how long. Garage filled the coolant up and run

i keep and just replace the normal cambelts and oil etc and keep fingers crossed or should i change to a BMW 5 Series with 100,000 miles on the clock as i have heard that these are capable of very high miles.  I really like the ford as bits are always so cheap but then again i look inside a 5
  • Vectra C - diesel or petrol Vauxhall? 16 Apr 2010 (Forum)
:   120 or 150hp CDTI engine: which trim would prove the most durable:  should the oil change intervals be shortened, etc, etc. And if anyone knows where to buy the cars at their best price, that would be very helpful, too. Edit:  I've just found HJ's review of these cars
  • Ford C-MAX - 3yr service due - main dealer, indy or diy? 20 Feb 2010 (Forum)
it until 8 years or more, she is considering going outside the dealer network for the next service. I could easily change the oil & filters and lube the hinges, check the brakes etc. I'd even hang a 99p airfreshener inside for the full "premium" service effect ;-) Only thing I couldn't do
  • One month old exhaust rusting. Is this normal? 9 Aug 2009 (Forum)
this picture with the engine running to show that there is no problem with my emissions. I've used no oil or water in the 1500 miles I have had the car. What has caused this? I suspect it must be rain water hitting it and then rust deposits landing on my plastic bumber. Do I have any comeback now
  • Mazda MX5 (1989 - 1998) - 1991 1.6 groan from clutch/box when cold 2 Aug 2009 (Forum)

  • Peugeot 405 Diesel (1988 - 1996) - 1996 1.9 catalytic converter - do I have one? 8 Jul 2009 (Forum)
anyone know whether this was standard issue on these vehicles? I've had a little look near the engine bay & I can see something 'bolted' onto the exhaust. However, as my 'expertise' begins and ends with changing the oil & filters I don't really know what I'm looking for. I know I'll have to have

really say it has a "full service history." I am worried about parting with my money with this knowledge as oil and filter changes are so important.

  • Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 2002 1.9 Diesel - smoke and clatter 14 Dec 2007 (Forum)
seconds of clatter. It's calmed down slightly since I have had it, and I am getting the oil and filter changed tommorow. The car starts and runs fine (although the idle speed is a little high) It's only done 58000, but I lot of may have been with a faulty timing control solenoid. When I bought the car
  • £3K to £4K to spend 25 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I am looking for a replacement for my 130K 97 1.6 Si Primera. I have had it for for nearly 4 years and have done 65K miles with under £500 of bills, other than changing oil, filters and plugs myself. It does around 40 mpg on mixed driving. It is getting a bit tired but hopefully will get through

  • Ford Transit 100 T260 - lack of power 23 Aug 2006 (Forum)
they leave me for dead at 70mph... it just won't go. Sometimes it accelerates at lower speed through the rev range impressively and then the next minute it runs out of steam shortly after the turbo gives a bit of boost. Totally upredictable! It's just undergone a big service, changing oil, fuel, airfiler

properly serviced so will take it in for a full sort out and MoT test. So a few questions: - 1. Cambelt or chain? 2. Car ten years old and 37,000 miles. What should I do other than obvious service items? 3. I want to change the coolant. Given this is a Japanese designed aluminium engine (I think Yamaha
  • DIY-Proof Cars 14 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I've just given up trying to change the oil on my Fiat Multiwagon, having discovered that my new Halfords wrench for removing the drain plug wont't fit (this has nine heads and 'fits most cars'). I've also found that it is impossible to replace any of the front bulbs myself, as the battery blocks

. Servo is OK as pedal depresses when I start up the engine. After switching off the engine whe vacuum is used up in 2 depressions of the pedal and the pedal feels dead firm then, which I believe is correct. The servo check valve is working correctly, cannot hear any air leaks. Oil condition is clear
