1996 1.9 catalytic converter - do I have one? - GeordieGuy
I'm just in the process of buying a full exhaust for my old but reliable 1.9TD 405 1996 estate. I prefer to take this to a garage some 16 miles away. As the part needs to be ordered in advance, the garage has asked whether this model has a CAT. They feel sure it probably doesn't.

So, does anyone know whether this was standard issue on these vehicles? I've had a little look near the engine bay & I can see something 'bolted' onto the exhaust. However, as my 'expertise' begins and ends with changing the oil & filters I don't really know what I'm looking for. I know I'll have to have this checked properly, but a quick word from someone here would be appreciated & might save me from an extra outing to my garage!

Thanks .. as ever!!

(Reply to myself)
Finally discovered that a CAT is rare on these old smokers, but this model does have one. However, only main dealer will supply so, economically, it might be time for the great scrappage pile in the sky. Not even the Quickie Fit people were able to quote.
Thanks for reading!

Why not replace the exhaust from the cat back, or alternatively replace with a non-cat exhaust?

Great minds think alike. I was thinking on the same lines, but ..................
I did ask whether I could put a non-Cat exhaust on, but was told that this would then fail all subsequent MOT tests as the car would be registered as having been supplied with a CAT. I didn't know this.
I can't just replace the middle & back box as these are different from the non-CAT exhaust - unless I pay a main dealer £500+

Thanks for the reply!

I'd be very surprised if only a Peugeot main dealer can supply exhaust parts.

I think GSF car parts might help; if not what about a French dealer, say in Calais? Go over on a ferry as a foot passenger, pay and collect!

firstly your car doesn't have a cat, it has a diesel particulate filter. secondly you can simply fit an exhaust system from an earlier model without the dpf. it will not fail the mot as diesels are not emissions tested the same way that petrol cars are. the swap to non dpf exhausts is quite common on 306's and xsara's with the same engines as they do give a slight performance increase.

Brilliant - I really appreciate the replies. The set-up has really confused the fitters - who swear it's a CAT. I notice that you can buy these on Ebay - which is doubly confusing if they're not normally fitted.
Three suppliers (big chains) have all given me the same story about dealer-supplier only after having checked with their suppliers - even Quick-Fit said the same and I guess they have access to all outlets. So, I'm confused too as the 405 was hardly a rare car in its day. I guess a walk to France is possible .... will keep searching.
Thanks Again!!!!

OK, thanks. Have checked Ebay ... so it could be CAT & not a particulate filter that I have - possibly. The www says that particulate filters were used by Peugeot post-2000. However, I honestly have no idea.
I really need supply & fit ... but might chase Ebay.
For such a straightforward job, this is all a little strange.
Thanks again for all of your obvious patience.

It is unlikely to be a particulate filter or trap on a 96 vehicle. What was fitted on early diesels(in some countries)was a two-way catalyst(oxidizing)-it usually had little effect. They were fitted too far back in the system to get very hot but would have a slight effect on particulates. In many cases the same car/calibration was offered in different markets with or without a catalyst-sometimes both were offered.Germany charged lower road tax if you had a catalyst on your car but it was not mandatory.St.III emissions required a three way catalyst(reducing) which is fitted much closer to the engine and has an effect on emissions and particulates.St.IV emissions have a much tighter limlt on particulates and this is why proper particulate traps are reqired.

hi geordie guy
i been looking around tinternet
there's an outfit called "online automotive" which when i pick your vehicle it shows a full system but without a catalytic converter. for a full system including gaskets, clamps, rubber mounts etc, it gives a price of £110 +£10 delivery of course this would require fitting it yourself or paying your local friendly garage. also a separate search for a catalytic converter on the same site shows one for a 1996 405 1.9 diesel for a price of £130. but they don't show it on a full system.

Thanks JC2 - that's helped me to get a better understanding. I appreciate this.
And, focusman, that's a brilliant reply. Thanks for the trouble - that's great. I've located the reference and will now get my local 'friendly' garage to do the job & buy this as you suggest. I do definitely have a CAT on my system - all the garages agree on that, even if they can't work-out how to source the solution to my exhaust.
Best Wishes & Thanks Again - exhaust ordered.

I'm not so sure that a cat was a legal requirement for '96 cars, I have three '96 2.1 td XMs and none of those have cats. I would enquire of another garage that doesn't employ a 'jobsworth'
