Vauxhall Astra (2009 - 2015)
1.6 Turbo SRi VX line
Reliable, comfortable and practical with a nice turn of speed
I bought this car at a year old with a hefty discount on new price and only 5k miles on the clock. The VX line Astra looks good with it's VXR (5 door) body kit and 19 inch wheels, the car is comfortable and great to drive, also good rear seat space and boot space makes it practical as well. Performance for the 1.6 Turbo is a little disappointing with the car lacking in low down torque, however when you hit 4000 rpm the car really takes off. Fuel economy is nowhere near manufacturers claim, motorway driving around 60-70 mph will return about 35 mpg, however town driving will drag the economy well below 30 mpg. As far as reliability goes, the car has had no problems at all since I bought it, look out for wheel size if you consider a sporty Astra, as 2 front tyres (19 inch) set me back over £300, service costs are reasonable from my local Vauxhall dealer.
All things considered, the Astra has proved a reliable, practical and comfortable car. Residuals do worry me slightly, that's why I would never consider buying a new car.
