Skoda Rapid (2012 - 2019)
1.2 TSI 110ps SE 5dr Hatchback
So underated, So competent.
This car gets such poor reviews from the motoring press and I really cannot understand why. It really is very capable and versatile. Ok, its not an SUV, ( which we are all told is what we should have ), but it will carry 5 people and masses of luggage, with this engine its very economical, and because its a Skoda, it has been very reliable and trouble free.
I have now driven just under 30,000 miles in it, at an average of around 48 mpg, and not a single thing has gone wrong. I do not drive at breakneck speeds, but I don't hang around either, and at the motorway speed limit it is quiet and comfortable. It's very nippy round town as well.
It looks like a saloon but is a very capacious hatchback. On a recent trip to a well known Swedish furniture store my wife and I brought home flat pack furniture measuring 2.05 meters long by dropping the split fold rear seats without a problem. Very similar looking to the very capable ( and popular ) Octavia, it is just a bit smaller ( especially in width ) and therefore better suited to narrow roads and lanes.
My only criticism concerns the comfort of the seats on long journeys - solved on a recent 1700 mile journey to France with a small lumbar cushion.
