Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2002 - 2009)
e220cdi Elegance Saloon
Comfortable and economical cruiser, a quality car
This is my fourth Mercedes (previously had C class petrol models) and my first E class. The car itself is a wonderfully comfortable car and makes for effortless driving. The only glitch for me has been the replacement of front ball joints on four separate occasions. In fairness to the dealer two were replaced free of charge. Since I have the car I have averaged 35mpg. Tyree are 225/45/R16 and on average I have changed every 15,000 miles. For such a large car it is a doddle to get in and out of tight spaces. The auto box has two settings Standard and Comfort. The Standard setting gives a bit more urgency to gear changes. However I prefer the Comfort setting as it gives a nice relaxed driving style. I find the power output 170bhp matches the car's weight well as the car never seems to struggling. Likewise the torque at 400nm makes overtaking very smooth and minimises the time spent on the wrong side of the road.
