Mercedes-Benz C-Class (2007 - 2014)
c220 cdi BlueEfficiency estate
A practical, comfortable and relaxed cruiser but without many frills or luxury feel
I traded in an absolutely abhorent SUV for the C220 estate. Having previously owned a E320 for several years, I missed the ride quality and practicality of an estate. This car returns an average 49mpg and is used for journeys of 10 miles or over - less than that I use a Mini. On a long run, with proper attention to the right foot this car will reward with over 60mpg and for that reason I will not regret the purchase.
So far, it has not let me down mechanically but that is just over a few months. My major criticism of the car is the interior. Whilst it is simple (I have had all the bells and whistles on an e class), I cannot say I miss the worry of yet another electrical gizmo failing. It is functional, sound system is good and it all works well and I do not get out after a long drive with a sore back! My gripe is the Mercedes leather-look plastic seats - they wear very badly and you have to pay attention to cleaning. The surfaces will scratch easily and look old and uncared for. Everything is replaceable of course - I replaced the upper seat back on the driver side at low cost but I think Mercedes really went down market with this trim.
The electric tailgate which is operated remotely from the driver seat or at the tailgate is standard and is a blessing.
The engine is a little 'agricultural', a bit harsh but pulls very well - in sport mode the car is a blast, however the 7 speed auto box does suffer from some hesitation on kickdown (a bit like 'are you sure you want to?'). Something I had read about - nothing serious, just not as smooth as an e class.
Overall, practical, comfortable and will not hurt your pocket (if you service it yourself).
