How did I manage without one? Just a shame about those headlights...

I bought this car on Click & Collect when my lease car from work had to go back. Changing from a 150bhp Passat estate I wanted something with at least as much room and comfort, with AWD and better towing capabilities. The Edge does all this and more.

Starting with the looks, it always draws attention (they're relatively rare in the UK, with around 9000 registered. Not many on the grand scale of things) and with its chunky US-style front it has definite presence on the road without being over the top.

Inside there's room for 2 adults, 2 rapidly-growing kids, 2 dogs and a load of luggage, and it's soooo comfortable on long journeys (even more than the Passat was). The 3-pin socket in the back is great for sorting the inevitable cries of "my tablet's nearly flat!" and there are storage compartments all over the place in the front especially. The massive panoramic roof is a nice touch, although having that means losing the roof rails, making fitting roofbars a little more difficult but not a major issue.

Running costs are what I expected. Coming from the Passat which sipped diesel at 60 mpg on a long cruise, the Edge on a similar journey will manage 40-42 and that's assuming you cruise at 60 or so. Around town you're doing well if you manage 35mpg. VED is again higher than the polar-bear loving VW, but paid monthly it's not an issue either.

Towing-wise, it has a 2000kg capacity, and with our 1700kg van on the back you barely know it's there - the Edge is a heavy car and keeps the caravan in check extremely well (far more than the Passat did). MPG when towing comes back at around 27-30, which is only a couple less than the VW managed, and the Edge is significantly more stable.

The only complaint I have are the headlights: they're r******. As in Ford saying "we need to shave a bit off the costs, so lets put candles in the front rather than bulbs". Many owners have upgraded to after-market bulbs with great success, but it looks as though the new MOT rules have put paid to that now as well...

Do the lights ruin things? No. Would I recommend the Edge? Definitely.
And you feel soooo smug when you're parked next to a Kuga...
