Ford Edge (2016 - 2019)
2.0 TDCi 180 Sport AWD 5dr SUV
Handsome, relaxing yet surprisingly agile with stacks of room and useful technology.
Update: 01/01/18
Now covered 16,000 miles without an issue or recall so still top marks for my Edge Sport. My dealer has also been fantastic and honoured my FoC first full service recently without any quibbles, even though the salesman that offered it on the deal has left. Manual gearbox variants of the Edge (post Sep 16 build dates) seem to get away without any problems at all. You can use the reg to find the build date with Ford Etis online system which is free. Overall I genuinely rate my Edge Sport 5/5 and top reliably amongst the other vehicles I currently from BMW, Skoda and Vauxhall.

Now covered 11,000 miles without a one single issue, recall or annoyance and still very satisfied with my Edge Sport. I'm a member of a popular Ford Edge social group and several owners have reported issues (active steering, sunroof and airbag recall) on *pre September 2016 builds. Other owners who have the manual version like me are also trouble free so there may be a theme there too. I would definitely recommend the manual version.
Review
I wanted a good looking, proper 5 seater diesel that was practical and safe but also enjoyable for me at weekends and on my 80 mile commute. I'm accustomed to various cars (own an old pickup & 545i) with two kids under two (!) and a max budget of £40K. My wife has a petrol hatchback for local trips so new car was for me / family outings or mrs when required.
After driving everything from an Audi Q5 and LR Disco Sport to Seat Ateca and Subaru Forrester I decided on the Edge Sport minutes into the test drive. I liked that it had proven manual gearbox which meant less to go wrong and more engaging to drive, it looked great, was a large size (as a range rover but not as high) and handled well with the sports setup. I also related to what Ford was up to globally with the GT, Mustang and Focus RS and researched that the Edge was proven in the US without issues. I was originally looking for a 7 seater but after testing models with 7 for myself I realised the rearmost pop up seats were very cramped and don't usually feature isofix so I decided on the Edge Sport's more usable five large seats instead.
I placed a factory order 09/16 for a Shadow Black Edge Sport manual with some specific extras; adaptive LED headlights, front 180 camera and inflatable rear seat-belts. I did not want the huge sunroof (typically troublesome on all cars) and preferred roof rail capability instead. The spec I asked for meant a factory build so a significant wait but bonus was a 2017 model with much improved SYNC 3 'infotainment' with screen share for android and apple phones, google maps etc. A good value PCP was icing on the cake.
I took delivery in early Jan 2017 and I can say honestly it is fantastic, all I was looking for and bettered my expectations. When I collected it looked superb, good looking but also a brute. Friends can't believe how it can be thrown through tight roundabouts and corners if pressing on whilst otherwise it's very relaxing to drive and quiet / comfortable. Cars and vans tend to shift from the outside lane sharpish when your come up (no bad thing) and I'm impressed by the adaptive LED headlights which auto project high beam but with segments cut out where vehicles ahead are sensed, makes a massive difference. I have two isofix car seats in the back with room for an adult to sit in between them. The All Wheel Drive makes driving in icy and poor weather very reassuring when added to a high driving position with wide visibility.
As writing I'm still breaking the engine in gently but there is still plenty of torque to overtake with ease and sit in the fast lane with dominance. Currently averaging 37 MPG at a decent motorway pace and thoroughly enjoying it. I will update this review moving forward, no complaints as yet but early days.
