Audi A4 (2008 - 2015)
1.8 TFSI SE 170 multitronic 4dr Auto Saloon
Woeful automatic gearbox.
How Audi can get away with fitting a gearbox like this to a modern car is beyond me.
All eight speeds change-up too early in "drive" and the only way to obtain a smooth pick-away is to set the box to "sport".
Manual selection is only usable when the car is actually rolling because first is way too low for anything except turning the wheels for the first 3/4's revolution. You are then left fighting the up-shift to get the revs down to a reasonable level as quickly as possible. The only way to beat the terrible change ratios is to let the torque converter engage on tickover before engaging additional accelerator or the drive will snatch and jerk violently. I approached the dealer for feedback, but was told this is normal.
The engine (being chain drive) is a little noisy, but revs well and seems to provide adequate torque without draining the petrol tank too quickly.
The interior is a quiet place with relatively good levels of fixtures, however, within six months of owning it, the water pump broke, £600 and not covered on the warranty because it was seals rather than mechanical.
