Audi A3 Sportback (2004 - 2012)
1.4 TFSI 5dr Hatchback
A good buy but not as economical as they say
After a 6 month wait I finally got the car that I wanted, an automatic version of the 1.4TFSi. I suppose that because this is such a popular car I had a long wait and the exchange rate on my Lexus was poor so I sold it privately. After 9 months and 10,000 miles I can honestly say that it is a fine car with the one exception that the fuel consumption is nowhere near the EU figure of 53 m.p.g. The only way to achieve this figure is never to drive up hill. I do a regular 20 mile round trip on the flat and have driven 1000 miles in East Anglia and then and only then can I get anywhere near this figure. After a poor start at around 38 m.p.g. I am now regularly achieving 43 m.p.g. and I am a gentle country driver in an area where hills are the norm. However, on long runs it is a most relaxing car to drive and has plenty of poke when needed to overtake. Noise levels vary with road surface type. Generally they are similar or higher than the Lexus IS and the auto-gear change is not as smooth or quiet as the Lexus, but hey, it costs about £5,000 less when new so something has to give.
All-in-all an excellent buy. It corners well, follows the steering wheel when it should and on 16" wheels isn't too hard on the backside. All that seems to be missing is a cup holder or 2. So far, zero problems, so fingers crossed for the next 10,000 miles.
