Peugeot 406 2.1td (98) - Aux belt snapped - Gavster

After changing glow plugs, air, oil, fuel filters and oil the car ran soooo much better. The following day the aux belt came off there was total loss of power. I have replaced the aux belt but I still cannot start the car. It turns over ok but dont catch. I had it idle once but there was no power. Could this be the cambelt gone? If so, how do I check?

thanks all.

The aux belt may have gotten entangled with the cam belt & caused it to jump one or more teeth.

You say the engine has idled for a while since the aux belt failed so the cam belt must still be intact.

Suggest you get the cam timing checked before you try starting the engine again.

Ditto and check the crank pulley condition as well.

If the cambelt has snapped, being a 2.1 you may be lucky, the chances are that it will have broken the rockers rather than damaged the valves so it should be able to be repaired without removing the head. A classic sign that the belt has snapped is that the engine will turn over very fast on the starter as if it has no compression, if it doesn't then the problem may lie elswhere.

Thanks all!

The engine turns over as though ot wants to start (sounds normal I think) and eventually will but it almost seems as though there is no air or the wrong mix? The smell of fuel and blue smoke makes me think the fuel is getting through?

Blue smoke and difficult starting sounds as though the cambelt has jumped a tooth and retarded the timing, it needs checking anyway. It shouldn't have done any damage, probably just jumped one tooth. If a new belt is due, now's the time to fit it.
