Got in my car tonight and noticed that someone had scratched a 6 inch mark, in a slight curve or arch, on my windscreen in my line of sight - there are 2 or 3 lighter lines below the main one also.

Checked outside and it is a definite mark as I can feel the raised line but it is hairline thick. A few milimeters on one side of the scratch there is another indentation where it looks someone dug something in, a key maybe, where they either started or finished the scratch.

Oddly, it is in a slight arch or curve and for a moment I wondered if the sweep of the wiper blades could have caused this with something trapped under them - can a stone or something in a wiper blade do this?

What can I do about this?

Can I get it polished out and is this something that I can get done on my direct line insurance for £75 via one of those windscreen repair firms?

Pretty miffed as I rarely drive nowadays and when I do I am so ruddy cautious - re the anxiety I used to suffer from - that I go out of my way not to cut people up or annoy them.

Thanks.

p.s.

Really not impressed with the wiper blades on the CRV - brand new wiper blades and they leave lines when it is raining. The main wiper blade is split in two and at the split level it always leaves a line at verage driving. Only driving at speed do the wipers appear to work effectively.

Hello, the scratches could have been caused by the wiperblades, like you mention meaby a small stone.Sorry to hear about your anxiety we all have anxiety problems sometimes.I dont know if your insurer will cover any repairs to the windscreen usually it is fully comprehensive insurance with cover glass repairs.Give the insurance company a ring.

Thanks for the info.

I was sat in the car today looking at it and I think it is the wiper blades - there is a whole series of lines in curves going right across the screen in the sweep of the large wiper blade. Most are not as prominent as the one which caught my eye.

This is ruddy annoying as the car is new from March 2009 and I have less than 10K miles on the clock as I hardly use it. The wiper blades have been hardly used and are the ones which came with the car new.

So I am not sure how to progress now as most of the windscreen needs something done - not sure if they can 'polish' the entire windscreen.

Not sure if it is something I should have sorted sooner than later? This is all new to me as I have never come across this before on any of my previous cars.

I would welcome positive thoughts from the Backroom.

I remember that an earlier discussion along these lines suggested the use of a substance called jewellers rouge which is a very slightly abrasive powder.

specifically mentions windscreen scratches. From what I read it isn't going to work on a scratch that you can feel with a finger nail ie anything with much depth. Hope this helps

I just wonder tawse,my car has automatic wiperblades they are very sensitive, come on sometimes when there is no rain.Your car is nearly new have you got the auto blades?Could have been the cause of your problem just a thought.

Honda CRV - Hairline Scratches On Windscreen - tawse
No, not auto blades on it but thanks for asking - just appears to have been bad luck that it picked up some grit in the blades.

Took it to autoglass yesterday and the guy looked at it but said there was nothing they could do, suggested some jewellers rouge and said he would have given it a go if he had some in but that they didn't stock it any more.

He checked my wipers and he said they were fine.

Have to admit, not been impressed with the wipers on the CRV before this happened - the driver side arm is split in two and where the two parts meet the blade leaves a line of water in the rain as if it cannot apply enough pressure or force at that point.

Never had this problem of grit and scratches on all my other cars in almost 30 years of motoring so perhaps it was just my time - it is the line of sight thing that is annoying.

Interestingly, quite a lot of Civic owners talking about the same problem with scratches and lines on their windscreens and I notice a few have questioned whether it is something to do with the wipers or the quality of the screens.

Have a word with the main dealer or pop in,you have a quality car and this should't be a problem you never know they should be helpfull you are there customer. It is a unusual problem like you said just unlucky with some grit or muck on the blades.

I`ve had this problem- one of the screen fitting companies will stick a new glass in and it will be like new.Don`t waste time trying to polish it out like I did.

If I leave the car on the drive for a few days now, I go out with a wet handful of kitchen roll - wiping the blades and where they sit on the screen.

I think a bit of grit was flung up while mowing the lawn in my case - also iit`s coming off the roof tiles. There`s a lot of other stuff dumped out of the atmosphere overnight on the white paint too.

You tend to notice all this after a scratched screen.....

Rest assured though - professional glass fitters are very good - it can be done on your drive and it`s no detriment to the car. You won`t know its been done.

All the best ;-)

I should add that the glass place said they could not do anything with the scratch re repair or replacement. But when I rang Direct Line they were very good about it and authorised a replacement.

In other words - although these glass companies seem to act as gatekeeps to claims - you can bypass them. I rang the glass place back - they checked with Direct line - a fitter then arrived on the drive (glass unseen by anyone at this point - just discussed on the phone) twenty minutes later it`s done.

And they do this for scratches?

I thought they only authorised replacement windscreens for large cracks?

Mine was replaced for a scratch. Much as you describe yours, Tawse. i`m good at sweet talking to call centres though. Maybe. ;-)
