Peugeot 307 - sold car on ebay, buyer won't use paypal - bananastand

Hi folks, just sold a car on ebay for £1750. Had the usual suspects messaging me saying "cancel the auction now and I'll give you cash" and words to that effect. The auction description said in no uncertain terms "PAYPAL ONLY" and people with no paypal account were unable to bid. The winner now says he won't use paypal as he has "been scammed" before. I think he wants to turn up with cash, find fault with the car and offer less. Am I paranoid? My instinct is to refuse and re-list. Ta.

eh?

when I sold my car on ebay I refused paypal as they are liable to confiscate your funds on the buyer's say-so

Cash is cash is king.

Paypal funds are here today but maybe not tomorrow.

CASH ONLY. No paypal for cars, you have no protection whatsoever.

I quite understand your position. I'm going to say cash is fine on the strict understanding that the payment comes first, messing with the car second!

PayPal can cause a lot more problems with a car run a mile from it take cash.

With cash the buyer might and I stress might haggle its darn sight better than having the total frozen by Pay Pal plus you will save on the commission.

Paypal offers you no protection when the buyer collects, as you will have no proof of delivery if the buyer claims they never received the goods. So paypal is not recommended when selling a car.

Because of this problem, a rogue buyer can pay by paypal, collect the car, file a not receieved complaint and get their money refunded. Because you don't have proof of delivery, you will lose every time.

As others have said, cash is king. Especially when the buyer collects.

Get the buyer to collect the car during business hours.

Take him for a spin so he can see the car performs fine.

Go with him to your bank, exchange the V5 for his cash & pay into your account so there will be no problem with doggy notes.

Job done & everyone happy.

Sound advice

paypal and car sales - Appleman
Guys

I advertised my car on one website and had 3 replies.

No 1 said he was a marine engineer and would pay by Paypal and his collection agent would collect it from me... on advice I a) declined b) notified the website

No 2 said she wanted to pay by Paypal - ditto I did the same

No 3 said he wanted to pay me double my price but also wanted me to buy a bike for him and some other bits and to send the lot to him in another country.... he wanted to pay by Paypal too. I did the same as before and had a brief ack from the website.

The advice I had was, as you say, Not Paypal for cars!

My security wont allow me to use Paypal. Anyway, what's wrong with cash?

thanks chaps my misgivings were unfounded. I took the cash and there were no problems. Having read your advice over paypal I wouldn't attempt to use it for payment on a car.
