Minibus seats & MOT............................... - piston power
A friend wants a ford transit or similar minibus LWB and is planning on taking out most of the seats and having some space at the back doors for the camping gear and stuff..

He's got 5x kids and the wife so ideally to be comfortable 7-8 seats is needed, the question is folks if he takes these seats out is it legal to drive ok? & when it needs the MOT will he have to fit the other seats back in or will they test it without?

The transit suits the bill it's so practical sliding door & roof rack for bikes where a 7 seater car is well a bit small.

DVLA seems to class a vehicle as a minibus if it has between 9 and 16 seats. If he takes seats out, he would need to contact DVLA to re-classify the vehicle as having seven or eight seats as appropriate. They should then classify the vehicle as, presumably, a car.
When insuring the vehicle I guess he will need to declare the modification.
