04 1.6 110hdi squeak / chirp on startup / clutch - pugopug
For about the first 5 miles every time I get in the car from cold, I will hear:

1) A longish squeak on turning the ignition key
2) A feint "tappy" squeak while idling, that repeats about every second or so
3) When the clutch bites, a short chirp
4) sometimes a short squeal when stopping the engine
After a while the squeaks seem to stop, and won't start again until I get in the car from cold again a few hours later.

Opening the bonnet, and looking at the engine, these seem to be coming from the driver's side of the engine bay, perhaps from the area immediately to the side of the plastic engine cover.

The car has covered 96K miles, always serviced on the dot, and had the DMF and clutch replaced at 93K after failure (peugeot main dealer, it was my father's company car). Otherwise a nice car (apart from the blasted fan running on when stopped).

What kind of thing could I be looking at here?

Also, I was very surprised when I asked the garage and they told me the cambelt isn't due til 144K or something equally implausible - my 2000 406 90HDI was every 80K! Is this really true?

The recommended cambelt change interval should be in the Owners Guide or Warranty & Service Guide.

get the timing belt kit done at 100 to 120 k,get the water pump done at same time.(they dont last longer then 150k)
the noise seems to be coming from alt belt area, the alt pulleys are supposed to be replaced at 60 to 80k,but nobody knows about these much,it could be that which is squeaking.its like a one way clutch on the front of the alt,bit like when peddling a bike, you can go forwards but not backwards.
on these i get a gates auxillary belt kit and put that on at the same time as getting alt sorted out.
with alt get it to an auto electrical repair bloke and get to overhaul all of it,the brushes and slip ring would be near the end of their usefull life as well by this mileage.
good luck,hope this helps.

thanks for all the advice.

On the cambelt interval, the book just says to ask the dealer for my particular engine - they gave me the 144K number - but I'm thinking I'm only going to have it done once in the lifetime of the car so might as well do it now. I had the waterpump done on my 406 at the same time, that always seems like sound advice. I'll get a quote.

What am I likely looking at for the alternator bits for the squeaks, and if it is that is failure going to damage anything (or just get me a trip in an AA van?!) :)

Though it was a company car I can't see things like pulleys etc having been replaced at 60 - 80K speculatively - do they actually put them on a servicing schedule or is it just a matter of them getting replaced when they are done?

if the alt pulley, seizes or overheats,it can shread the alt belt which will then get sucked up into the cam belt and make it jump a few teeth,so it can lead to cambelt failure.
get it sorted asap, ive seen it happen afew times, esp on renaults.

took it this morning to the Norwich peugeot main dealer. They managed to work out it was the fuel lines not clipped into a holder, with it being more noticeable at cold due to the increased movement in the engine. Anyhow £38 later now squeak free, not bad really.

They did say that the auxiliary belt should be replaced next service as is showing some minor signs of wear - and commented exactly as you have that the bad thing that may happen is the shreds ending up colliding with the cambelt.

All in all a result, many thanks to all for the comments.
