Various F1 constructors operate in the Thames valley and around the M25 - MacLaren in Woking - and their specialist suppliers too.

How strangely cheering and heartening, Rattle. Well done.

Thanks sorry about all the typos again. I think I will start using word before typing into forums!

I am sure there are a lot more still. I have not included any of the bus companies because the list could just go on for ever.

Now I wonder how many factories there are in France? I don't have the stats but I would bet that the UK produces more cars than France.

Where I am from there is a very little car industry, although Crossley and Rolls Royce were born here. We also had main Ford factory in Europe in Trafford Park.

France outproduces us in car manufacturing massively unfortunately, even more unfortunately they actually make the entire car unlike here where an awful lot of 'assembling' takes place rather than manufacture

What do you mean by the above. I cannot think of one mass market auto manufacturer that manufactures and assembles its entire product range. The core activity of any car manufacturer is the assembly of cars on the production line, any thing else that is not part of that process is or will be subbed out, ie Materiial handling, Sub assembly, Logistics planning. The current model being built in Ellesmere port has a supplier base stretching from the Ukraine & Turkey in the east, Sweden in the north, North Africa in the south, and Iberia to the west, plus of course all those in between. I fail to see how the french can manage all that themselves, " They do not work hard or long enough for a start ".

I may be getting mixed up, but isn't there a massive trim factory in the UK which supplies all the leather rims, gear knobs and even seat meterial for the french companies?

If you include low-volume specialists the UK has the greatest number of car companies, a bit of a cottage industry. The figures I have are for 2004: there were 102 companies that built and sold cars in the UK. The next highest country is the USA with 77 companies.
Also I wasn't sure if I should include cars sich as Noble, Caterham etc.

No harm in mentioning world-renowned companies such as: AC, Ginetta, Marcos, Caterham, Westfield, Noble, Ariel, Radical, Ultima, etc. Most are 100% UK owned.

Not to mention R&D and component companies such as Ricardo, Prodrive, Ilmor, etc.

It would be difficult to find any manufacturer these days who produces a complete car within the boundaries of one country.

What does sadden me, looking at that list, is the dearth of heavy commercial vehicle manufacturers still left in the UK. I am happy to be corrected, but the only remaining one of note is Dennis, I think. ERF, Foden and Seddon-Atkinson have all shut up shop in recent years, and Volvo's Scottish plant closed in the 1990's; on a positive note the LDV vans business seems to be getting more successful.

I was looking at the Leyland Trucks website last week. The Leyland plant manufactures DAFs, employs 1400 people and exports 50% of production to Europe.
But they are of course American owned by Paccar (who also owned Foden but 'retired' the brand in 2006), At least the Leyland plant is their global design centre for light and medium duty trucks.

I thought LDV were still linked to Leyland but just found out they are Russian owned by Gaz Group...
