I paid a deposit for a new car at a main dealer by VISA debit - I now have major concerns over the deal.
No paperwork signed or provided other than a manual receipt for my deposit, no details of the car etc.
Is there a contract to buy?
Your thougths & advice much appreciated

I don't know the legalities and how much you paid.
However, last year I paid £200 deposit by Visa Debit over the phone for a dealer demonstrator car that I had test drove. However I then discovered 2 days later I could get the exact same car but brand new from another dealer. So I called the first dealer and cancelled and told him to keep his £200 for the time I had used of his.

Thanks for this response
Some additional info_I am trying to tackle too many issues at once and out of character I paid this deposit or I would loose the deal.
I am sure someone out there will have been through the same circustances

I had the same experience you need to talk to the dealer, explain your circumstances have changed and would he return the deposit in goodwill. Explain that you are a potential future customer and after sorting your temporary problems you may well be back as a purchaser. If the car is one easily sold then he should return the deposit.
I recently paid a deposit at my local Fiat dealer, wanting to secure a new 500, this was verbally agreed on condition I sell my Panda privately before the delivery of 500. I did sell the Panda and all went well. However Im sure he would have returned my deposit.

Probably but you need to talk to the dealer concerned.

I ordered a Colt CZC from a main dealer but following all the mither with them I cancelled it because I couldn't get one. In my case though it was written march delivery on the contract that myself and the salesman signed. I still had REAL trouble getting my deposit back though, and in the end my bank had to intervene because I paid with VISA debit card. I told them I'd paid for something I'd not recieved and they refunded my account and took it up with the dealer. Not heard anything else since.

Bought cars with deposits at main dealers, each time the details of the car were provided / confirmed with the balance to pay and terms and conditions.
How can you prove what car you have ordered if there are no details?
The dealer could give you a car with slightly different spec and you could not argue against it, as there is nothing in writing.
If the dealer will not give deposit back, then if you wish to proceed ask for confirmation of what you have ordered incl spec. etc.

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far.
These comments are most helpful.
My giving a deposit when questions remained unanswered is quite out of character - however I am heavily involved with urgent domestic issues.
Am going to have a conversation with the dealer today if no joy then my bank.
will update later
