As part of my ongoing quest for safety l am looking to upgrade my volvo 480 calipers for something approaching the Brembo standard. (I was thinking of using larger disks/calipers from a v40 along with the rims themselves but now l'm like..whole hog)
Please feel free to laugh at me for a moment and then assume l am serious. I can get the calipers from a prestige scrappers - admittedly porsches and the like don't get scrapped they merely get 'dismantled' lol. (Bit like 'studying' a degree at Uni, except for Oxbridge where you 'read' a subject)
Fouling on rims and similar issues are easily remedied.
I am basically concerned about the number of pots (2 to 4!) and the conversion work required to the brake cylinder. Could anyone give me pointers as to who l need to talk to or info on this.

Can't help technically but a mate who upgraded his brakes struggled to get insured afterwards.
Check that first.

I once did this to a late Vauxhall Viva, that had drums all round. I used the whole stub axle assembly off an FD Victor, and then had to get a set of Vauxhall Firenza alloys, to clear the new calipers. The brakes were slightly better than the drums, no servo, and gave me one problem after another. Don't one of the advertisers in Max Power, etc, list better brakes for the 480? An upgrade kit should give you less grief.

Why don't you simply upgrade the brake pads to a roadsport grade. Something like EBC Green Stuff will give you about a 20% improvement for the cost of a new set of pads. I use these on my Rover 820 Turbo (all four wheels) - they're superb. You could well end up spending 10 times the cost of a set of pads to get a 40% improvement. If you're rallying the car that would be worth it, but for road use??

Have you considered lookign at grooved or cross-drilled brake discs?

There aren't any 'kits' l checked... I have two options... to replace the axle stub (in which case l get one that takes a fat caliper/disc from the outset although this just moves the compatibility problem onto another part) or l get a mounting plate engineered specially to allow the uprated caliper to be fitted to the original axle. This is a trip down fleeceme lane unless you have access to someone who works in an automotive machineshop.
Although better pads are an easy way out, my calipers are pretty ropey looking, and wont look any better with a larger rim. (I don't want to end up with a rice car)
