Hi folks, I'm new here and hope that some of you technical geniuses can give me some advice!
I have a 180,000mile non turbo 1.9 diesel 405 and I ve noticed a lot of free play on the throttle spindle (Lucas pump) It moves about an inch before the engine speed increases and welly appears to be even less than usual. fuel consumption has also dropped into the 30s, is it time for a new pump?
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

As the lucas pump would be more expensive to strip down to source the problem and saying that the parts for it would be getting a bit difficult to source for it since the 405 is not built anymore, my best bet is to replace the fuel pump at least then u will get another good 180,000 miles out of it, in theory it is good for a lucas pump to last all that long, try www.pugspares.co.uk, as they maybe able to get you one at a reasonable price, they also to other parts if u need it in feature.

I would remove the lead seal from the maximum fuel adjuster on the front of the pump and try adjusting it slightly to improve the response of the throttle lever. When the fueling is set too low the throttle lever moves excessively before the engine picks up from idle.

Hi, can you describe the max fuel thingie please, all the seals are missing from the pump (not me, like it when I bought it) I've also noticed that the engine won't rev past 4200 in any gear but the book sez 5000, could this be part of the same problem? Cheers for your time.

hi, It could be, it's located on the front of the pump roughly inline with the pivot of the lever...the screw has a slot in it and is locked in place by a 12 or 13 mm nut i believe. You need to turn the screw in the direction that increases engine revs. adjust it so that the engine picks up properly but doesn't smoke excessively when you rev it hard.

This will only adjust the Max. Revs. of the engine.

Your best bet would get another pump from a scrappy or Ebay from another peugeot 405/306 or Citroen ZX or its going to be a large expense, all are the same 1.9 non-turbo engine. But ensure its from a non-turbo as many were Turbo's and its a Lucas not a Bosch as they are different with the pipe fitting etc. My son got his Bosch pump on Ebay for his 306 at £50 all sealed and in good condition.

good luck

No ! that's a completely different adjustment!!, the stop limiting the travel of the lever is the maximum speed adjustment screw . For the sake of 5 mins of spannerwork it's worth trying before ripping the pump off.

I see you mean adjusting the actual fueling screw inside the pump.

I've adjusted mine many times using a mirror to locate the socket head screw and turn to increase the fueling on my TD along with the boost.

But who ever attemps this with the pump on or off the engine must NEVER use a BALL-END allen key which is 4mm or it will snap the end off as these screws are very tight and then you're in trouble. Also you need only turn clockwise approx. 5minutes (10degs) at a time and watch for excess black smoke at full throttle from 2000 rpm.

That's what i'm suggesting, It's a non turbo lucas so the fueling adjuster is outside the pump on the front face (flathead screw and locknut) ..i have re set the lucas fuel pumps on peugeot 205's and 305's .... i dont see why the pump on the 405 should be any different unless they were changed on later models?.

Just to let you know, I adjusted the pump and all appears to be much better, just completed a 1500 mile round trip to Germany and the old girl was sat at 100mph on the autobahn in places and overall consumption is back into the mid 40s. Thanks for the help folks!

That's a good result much hassle hassle than changing the pump. Should be ok for the mot smoke test if you haven't increased the fueling too much. Best regards
