Hi all, can any1 help me? I have a rover 111i. I know its going to need to go to the car park in the sky soon, but I really can't afford another before xmas. The problem is its misfiring terribly, it really sounds like the exhaust is blowing (its not, just replaced in April) it has no go at all. I bought new plugs and leads last week, its no better. My friend has exactly the same car which she's scrapped as the head gasket has gone and she said I can help myself to anything, so I've just been round there and changed the distributor cap (couldn't get the rotor arm off) still no better and changed the coil. Its drinking petrol like no tomorrow. I got 180 miles out of £30 which is terrible for my car, I normally get 80+ out of £10.
Can any1 help? I only use it for work (thankfully) which is a 6 mile round trip, but I need it.
Thanks

Just because it was only changed in April doesn't mean that it isn't blowing. Have you checked that it isn't? That 6 mile round trip to work and back will shorten it's life as it never gets hot enough to dry out.

Don't discount the catalytic convertor either - I assume it has one? It *could* be that it's partially collapsed and is restricting the engine. Again the short trips could have shortened it's life.

being injection will have cat, usually the only section of exhaust that is replaced is section/s rear of cat.so not a full exhaust, could be as DD said cat has failed or bad leak on down pipe from engine to cat.but that would be noisy...Not certain of this car so could be wrong

Consider getting it compression tested.

Burnt out exhaust valve will produce your symptoms.

If it's only going to last a few weeks it may be cheaper to just keep putting the petrol in it

High fuel consumption could be down to the type of journeys... 3 miles each way to work this time of year and the engine wont be coming off choke

Thanks all. Its been doing this for the last 3-4 weeks I thought it was because of the really cold weather. It sounds the same as an old volkswagon (herbie) engine sounds. Put another coil on it yesterday and still no better. The car starts fine and pulls away fine in 1st gear, it starts when you put it in 3rd gear and it feels really bumpy, once it starts thats it, it will then do it in all gears, I've noticed I can't get in 5th gear as often because it really jumps alot if I'm not doing any speed, It used to be able to go round corners in 3rd now it won't. If I stop on a hill I have to really go on the throttle as it doesn't have the power.

Has the car been on a long run and warmed through recently? Girlfriends 214 (fundamentally same engine) has been doing similar to what you describe until engine up to full operating temperature (2-3 miles) and then its fine....garage think its putting too much fuel in the engine until its warm - kind of stuck choke!

Temperature sender unit connected to ecu (not dashboard) being replaced this week, if it does the trick I will let you know and you can at least swap it from your donor car...

Thanks for that. It hasn't been on a run, its only been to work and back (3 miles each way) although I did go 6 miles last week and I think it was still doing it. We always go everywhere in hubbys car as he has an astra estate diesel and it so economical, so my car sits on the drive most of the time. I would appreciate it if you could let me know how it goes.I may just change the tsu anyway as its not going to cost me anything.
thanks again

Both engine water temp sensor and air temp sensor are connected to ecu,But would suggest if temp guage working-then air temp sensor may be at fault

If anything, the car could benefit with a good old fashioned Italian tune up. A forum search will reveal more, but basically it involves taking it for a good thrash and not using top gear to keep the revs up.

Agree with DD these engines do like the revs,So give it a good thrashing 1st 2nd up to 4000/4500 rpm will do it no harm.only good,if its been like this for a while it may hesitate but it should pick up and blow out the cobwebbs

Thanks. I'm not using it until Thursday now, but when I go to work I'll thrash it in 1st and 2nd and see what happens.
