I'm not a Peugeot fan, but the 407 does stand out from the crowd. As a potential replacement for my Volvo S60, they look really good value at under £11k for a 54 plate 2.0 petrol. And living in France as I do, servicing must surely be cheap and easy to arrange? What's the catch?! Anyone out there own one or drive one?
Equivalent Mondeos seem to be a bit pricier, before anyone recommends the Mondeo TDCI...!

I was pretty happy with the (several) 406's that I had, although the last one had a HPI petrol engine (a Peugeot/Citroen experiment, now defunct) which never really worked properly. I used them as company cars doing 30,000mls/yr and, although I'm a gentle driver, they did seem to need a lot of brake and suspension work. I would have expected that French roads would be worse than ours so I'm wondering how well they'd cope (although it being French you would have thought it would be up to the job)?
Other than that, no problems really. Very comfortable 'cruising' cars. I imagine the 407 would be very similar.
I am surprised by the pricing - are you comparing like for like? I would have expected a Petrol Mondeo to be a similar price.
Also, isn't diesel much cheaper in France, than in the UK?

Maybe this view had some truth many years ago, but for the past decade I've found French roads to be far superior to (and much less congested than) those in the UK.
Returning from a holiday in France invariably heightens my sense of dismay for our crumbling, over-policed excuse for a road network.
Oh, the 407 doesn't look bad, either - possibly the first with the 'wide-mouthed frog' grille treatment......

I'm going to make a bold statement now. The 407 looks nicer than the Mondeo.
I know I know - I'm crazy I hear you say. But That's one of the boxes ticked.

I would go for the diesel, particularly as you live in France. Nice cheap diesel.
407SW HDi would be my choice.

I think the 407SW (estate) is drop dead gorgeous, even prettier than the saloon.

You mean we can't even suggest that there may be better looking cars than a Mondeo without the fear of ridicule?
|
Well - Peugeots aren't very highly regarded on here. And before you have a go at me, we had one - and it did nothing to bolster my opinion of them.
That being said, the 407 looks damn nice. As Dave says, the estate looks fantastic.
Far better looks than the Mondeo. What about the drive though?

The French roads are indeed better than ours in the main. Its cos they spend OUR tax money maintaining them! (Rant over)

I had a 407 estate as a hire car a couple of weeks back - didn't drive it myself so can't comment on that. It's the first car I've been in where I genuinely didn't know if it was diesel or petrol. It turned out to be diesel and the engine really is astonishingly quiet (I'm not a diesel fan), much more so than the diesel units in Fords, Opels or VWs. I found the interior stylish and spacious if not as well finished as e.g. a Passat and the seats are very comfortable on a long journey. The car was fitted with a full length glass roof which was nice but resulted in the aircon working overtime to keep the interior cool, even with the roof blind closed.
