Can I get a shock absorber replaced under warranty?

My 71 reg Volvo XC40 (22,600 mls) has just had its 3 year service at a main dealer and was due its first MoT. I was told on collection that it needs one new rear shock absorber and won’t pass the MoT without it being done. The quoted cost seems quite high and I wondered if this could be covered by the 3 year warranty (one week left of it) or will it be classed as wear and tear. If it is wear and tear wouldn’t the other three need replacing too?

Whether the shock absorber is included under warranty will depend on the exact terms and conditions which should have been supplied when the vehicle was new. We would not expect a shock absorber to be considered as a consumable such as tyres or brake pads, and we would also expect it to last more than 22,000 miles so that would suggest it is a failed component.
