VW Beetle 2.0 year 2000 - Emissions help MOT Failure - ilove-VWs
Does anyone have any ideas how I can improve the emissions on my vintage VW Beetle the car has failed MOT on Emissions only.. it runs lovely no rust has lots of new parts including a 3-4 year old cat. Its had redex and the premium petrol always E5 the only thing it hasn’t had for a while is a new exhaust system. but I don’t want to pay for a whole new exhaust system if it will make no difference to the emissions because as far as I can see the exhaust looks good .. will changing it make a difference

You need to book it into a VW specialist who knows his way round the engine management of these cars. It may be something as simple as a sensor but if its HC readings it could be engine internal wear.

Cannot see how a new exhaust will help.

Can you post up the emissions fail data ? That would help with some diagnosis. I don’t think you need a VW specialist, any good tech that understands the problems with fuel systems should be able to sort it out.

What is the annual mileage?

Do you go for a long (20miles) fast (60mph+) drive before MOT? That will clear the deposits from the cat and exhaust .

If no and short journeys, try that first.

2000 is "vintage" now? Dont think so, especially not in the context of VW Beetles

If this is the Golf-based "neo-Beetle" it'll be burdened with a catalytic converter. so a "new exhaust" might well make a difference, though probably not necessary.

If its a classic air-cooled Beetle (perhaps Mexico-produced) it might still have a catalytic converter as a late model. If it doesnt have a catalytic converter a new exhaust wont make any difference to emissions, unless the exhaust is blocked and interfering with engine breathing

If its cat-free. it either needs a tune, or it needs rebuilt. You might try new plugs and removing the air filter temporarily .

EDIT : Sorry, missed the "three year old cat" bit, so that answers that.

Its possible its running rich and so has killed its cat, which I'd have thought should last more than three years.

I suppose ones next move might be to get an OBDII reader and check your fuel trims. but I have no experience with all that OBD catalytic converter stuff.

If you just replace the cat without diagnosing and sorting the underlying problem, your replacement likely wont last long
