Im hearing this maybe once a week, and sometimes there is oil under the car.

It only happens on start up and the car runs fine after, with no further noise or issue. I took it to my local garage and they said (after a quick "im busy" look) that they saw nothing wrong.

I asked if it could be the timing belt, but they said no as the belt wouldn't make a noise like that.

Sounds like the camshaft dephaser making the noise. You say there’s an oil leak , have you checked the oil level . Insufficient oil can make the dephaser noisy .

Sounds like a diesel. Is it a diesel or petrol Clio?
