Toyota Prius 1.5 - Thinking of buying a Used Prius - killie77
Hi
Looks like the Wife’s Car may be a Write Off.. Had it down to the body shop yesterday they reckon 2 new Doors and the sill needs repairing..I guess our Car is worth about £2000 book price so I’m thinking with the cost of repairs and it being a 59 plate they may write it off..
Which means we have to look for a replacement,we don’t do a lot of mileage shopping and the Wife takes it to work 6 miles their and back and that’s only a couple of days a week.
So looking around at various options, I’m wondering if a used Prius might suit our needs. I’m thinking of the 1.5 Hybrid maybe a 2008/2009 plate I realise their going to have a lot of mileage at that age but if I can find one with decent service history, would they be worth going for ?
Thanks
Ian

Yes, it may well suit your needs, and yes, they are very reliable. But, if you think you are only going to be able to afford a high mileage 10 year old example, i would suggest something else. If you gave an indication of what sort of budget you are thinking about, some other suggestions could be made?. 2008 Prius prices start at £1850 on Autotrader, that is for a 225k miles(!) example, which isn't much (money), but if we take the maximum miles down to 100k you are looking at just over £4k.

Using the criteria of >£5k, >100k miles, and private sellers, on Autotrader there are a grand total of 8 Prius. You may find there is a nice one nearby, if so thats grand. But i wouldn't rule out one from a dealer at this price. If you really want a hybrid, you should also check out the Honda Insight, which is similar to the Prius but uses a simplified hybrid system. The motoring press never thought much of them, but the (owners) reviews on Autotrader seems to suggest owners love them (as is the case with the Prius).

If you are set on a Prius or other hybrid, i'd suggest looking for a for a dedicated forum to get more in depth knowledge of the pro's and con's.

also worth considering an Auris hybrid (esp estate)? But you are likely to be competing with private hire car /Uber drivers.

£5k isn’t enough to get a decent Prius but it can get a reasonable Auris Hybrid which is essentially the same car mechanically.

But here’s an example of something I’d be looking at on this sort of money. Nothing complex, no battery pack to degrade and nicer to drive while also more spacious and still capable of 50mpg on a run. Possibly near you too?
