Anyone bought a car with EXACT mileage? - clariman
There\'s a garage in North Wales selling a yellow P-Reg Fiat Barchetta (sp?) for £5,995.

Its says on the ad on the windscreen that it has done 90,000 miles.

A glance at the speedo shows a mileage of ..... 90,000 (exactly!).

Is such an exact mileage suspicious? And is it a good car for the price? It\'s LHD by the way!

If you're clocking a Barchetta why stop at 90k? They're bought by town people who pose, don't know much about cars and would probably be put off by such a 'high mileage' car anyway.

£5995 is an absolute fortune for a 6 year old car - at 60k, it would be a grand overpriced in my opinion. £6k is nearer MGF money at that mileage, which is far more desirable and even then, not exactly bargain basement.

The exact mileage is the least of your worries here. On average, a car spends 1/10,000 of its time on that round figure, so logically 1 used car in 10,000 should have that round mileage on it at any given time. The closest I've seen is 100,002 btw.

Never thought of it like that. Pretty little car though.

The exact mileage may put you off but as a matter of interest the last BX we owned suffered a failed head gasket and was scrapped...at exactly 249,000mls with all the zeros in line!

Headlights once failed on my clapped out Dolomite at about 2am a long long way from home on a windswept night. Sitting there thinking what to do about it when I noticed that odometer read 666666 (yes, right down to the tenth of a mile dial). Problem solved - I just floored it and drove on until the mileage was a little less diabolic

Wasn't it the Simpson Family who planned a day out together so they could all watch the 100,000 miles come up?

Dragging slightly off topic but..

In my first car, about a month after passing my test I was dazzled by low sun. A motorcyclist appeared out of the blue in a narrow piece of road. I braked and he swerved, so he only clipped my mirror but carried on. The mileage reading was 66666.6 - that taught me to take great care when I can't see.

Fiat Barchetta..... It's LHD by the way!

That's because they only made 'em in left hooker format.

Bought a Fiat Panda on exactly 71,000 miles once.
Also had a W-reg XR3 with 00002 miles showing, unfortunately it was 15 years old, and more worryingly came with a receipt for engine work carried out 5 years previously at 99,500 miles... I assume I bought it at 200,002 miles! Kind of set a trend for me really.

It sounds very expensive for the age and mileage - you should be able to find a much newer and lower mileage model for that money. There are a few barchetta specialists in the country who might have a better selection. There's a company called DTR Sportscars who specialise and another one down near East Grinstead.

I also have to disagree with the description of the barchetta above. I owned one about 3 years ago, I only had it just over a year but it was a fun car with far more character and much better value than the likes of the MGF etc.

On the downside, the chassis can get caught out on the UK's bumpy roads (a legacy of the Punto based platform) and some common faults.

Rgds,

n.b. Are you sure the 90,000 isn't km?. Most barchettas are imports with km based speedos.

Ah well then, it's not exact mileage as it's done 55,926 miles... much more sensible.

As for desirability, I agree up to a point. I like the Barchetta and think it's cute and fun, but most people, given a straight choice, would go for an MGF, making the MGF more expensive and desirable in that sense. I'm not sure that either is necessarily a better car - there's a surprising amount of Metro still in the MG for a start.
