What first car?

I've just passed my test and am looking for a first car. Main thing for me is it needs to be safe, cheap to insure and fairly reliable. I have been looking at a Citroen C2 1.1 (2003) second hand for just about £1500, which would bring my (3rd party insurance) in at just over £1k.

Can you recommend any other cars for consideration (again for around £1500)? I have heard French cars are a bit wayward but not sure what the science is behind that!

Generally in this price category the best small car is a Fiesta 1.25 (NOT a Fiesta 1.3).
