Jaguar XJ 350 / 358 - Leaper - hillspecial

Been looking at used XJ 350s / 358s on Autotrader.co.uk {other used car websites are on t'interwed also} and seen quite a few such Jags {and S Tyoes too} with the {small, not MKII- esque} leapers on the bonnet.

Last Jags to have leapers as standard were the 240 and 340, the low spec / price MKIIs of the late 60s? Possibly the old S Types and 420s too - all of the same era - pre XJ6 SI?

What would happen if pulled up by the rozzers with one?

Is the dealer at fault if they sell such a Jag with a leaper fitted?

Is it not an MoT fail as unsafe body work?

How come RR can still fit their ironmongery on the bonnet ?

Leapers not legal in UK, but they are in the USA?

I don't know the answers to the other questions, but the RR Spirit of Ecstasy is designed to withdraw downwards into the grille on impact. The Mercedes 3-pointed star would bend backwards. I don't think the Jaguar 'leaping cat' was capable of either of these things.

There are mascots available which separate from the base on impact meeting the EU regulation and so are presumably legal. Rigid mounts are unlikely to meet the construction and use regs.

Hi Brit-In-Germany,

ah, are these the small leapers seen on some Jags?

Do you have a link to the ones you talk of?

Ta.
