Volkswagen Golf IV - Starting then stopping - Hairy Dangler
I have an intermittent fault which allows me to start the car but it stops again almost immediately. Sometimes I can clear it by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery and sometimes it clears itself if I leave it overnight. Any ideas?

It feel like the immobiliser is cutting in, as it actually fires up and runs momentarily and then stops as if the ignition is turned off. All happens in a couple of seconds.
Sometimes disconnecting the battery clears it, but sometimes I can't clear it. I can go back to it the next day and sometimes it starts ok. Interval between events is shortening.

The fact that the engine runs for a few seconds and then cuts out could be an immobiliser issue.Is there any warning message in the dash info window or key light flashing?Do you have another key?

Don't have another key. Dashboard symbols flash up and go too quickly to see which ones. Maybe an airbag light!
