KIA Ceed 1.6 CRDI - KIA Ceed 1.6 CRDI problems after clutch change - Stuart Arnold

My 2008 1.6 CRDI Kia Ceed had a clutch change a few months ago and since then it's had a few problems. Turbo boost seems to come in late and sometimes the engine light comes on with a P0299 error, which indicates a boost leak. Sometimes the light will come on going uphill, so when the engine is under load. Another problem is it starts from cold with a very rough idle and some white smoke from the exhaust, which smells bad. Once the car starts to warm up the idle seems ok, and it runs quite well. One strange thing I noticed is when I first start the car and the idle is rough, if I hold the clutch in while the car is in neutral the engine will rev up smoothly, but if the car is in gear the engine will hesitate to rev. I don't know if this issue could be an indication of what has happened since the clutch was changed. The small independent garage that changed the clutch have no idea what's wrong, and the KIA dealership I took it to are equally useless.

Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

Replacing a clutch on a modern car usually involves a lot of dismantling of surrounding components for access to the gearbox . The fact that you have a code for a boost leak , tends to suggest there is an intake pipe not attached properly or has been damaged during the repair. Get a garage to smoke test the air intake system .

What elekie doctor said. It could be as simple as a clamp not done up properly.

It's got a vacuum controlled boost function on the turbocharger - I reckon they've connected the vacuum pipes the wrong way round on the control valve, a common workshop booboo.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies so far. At first I thought it might be something to do with the boost solenoid so checked it was piped up correctly from checking pictures of the same engine on the web.

I also checked the solenoid could hold a vacuum with a brake bleeder tool and that it works when connected directly to the battery. I'm planning to take it back to another garage as I also think it could be a problem with turbo hosing damaged or not connected properly.

The thing I'm mostly concerned about now is how the engine will rev up cleanly when I am sitting in neutral and with the clutch in, but when I put it in gear and hold the clutch in, it doesn't want to rev up (hesitates/feels like its being held back). I thought if the clutch was in, the engine would be completely disconnected from the gearbox so it wouldn't matter if it was in gear or not (and affect revving).

I thought this might be a sign of a incorrectly fitted clutch? If this was the case then I would take it back to the place who fitted it.

Also I'm not sure if this could be related to the boost leak or a separate issue.

If you let a different garage work on the car the original garage will quite rightly say its no longer their problem. They would argue that the 2nd garage caused the issue and how would you prove they didn't?

Go back to where you had the work done originally. Its their problem to sort.
