Volvo XC70 - Volvo XC70 2015 D4 2WD Cambelt change interval - valmiki

Hello everyone,

My father drives an XC70 D4 engine, auto, 2WD, on a 65 plate (one of the last few before they discontinued it). He doesn't do many miles any more (mostly long distance), currently around 58k. I'm hearing different reports of when to have the big service done it which inc the cam belt etc. Volvo dealer initially said at the 4th service that he could have it done but it wasn't compulsory and that the intervals have been extended. I'm sure if I contact them now they'll suggest that he gets it done straightaway. Anyone have a different opinion on when he should? Thanks in advance

On a seven year old car I would be taking it to a good specialist. The Volvo dealer will be following the manufacturer's guidelines and your father is paying for all the gloss of a main dealer but will see little if any benefit to residuals.

Some cars can go beyond the recommended interval but some engines have a reputation for failing and need replacing at the correct time.

I totally agree, but my father has other ideas and wants to continue using the Volvo dealer! A part of it is that Volvo offer free breakdown cover for a year as long as you have the car serviced there so he's keen to carry on.

Presumably he knows the cost of a cambelt change?

I know nothing about the cambelt set-up design of this engine but I would assume that it is at least as good and durable as that of our old Mk1 Ford Focus which, at around three times the age and mileage of the OP's much newer Volvo, has just gone to the scrapyard with its original cam and poly-v belts. The 1.6 Zetec set-up was designed to last the life of the engine, but cautious Ford advised a precautionary change at 10yrs and 100,000 miles - which I eschewed.
