Ship carrying Porche's & VW's on fire in Atlantic. - focussed

"BERLIN/LISBON, Feb 18 (Reuters) – A ship carrying around 4,000 vehicles, including Porsches, Audis and Bentleys, that caught fire near the coast of the Azores will be towed to another European country or the Bahamas, the captain of the nearest port told Reuters on Friday.

Lithium-ion batteries in the electric cars on board the vehicle carrier Felicity Ace have caught fire and the blaze requires specialist equipment to extinguish, captain Joao Mendes Cabecas of the port of Hortas said.

It was not clear whether the batteries first sparked the fire.

“The ship is burning from one end to the other… everything is on fire about five meters above the water line,” Cabecas said."

It is possible that the fire originated in non-EV vehicles, many ship owners now demand that batteries are disconnected after being loaded on car carriers as several total loss incidents and sinkings have occurred recently.

The danger of lithium batteries getting damaged can’t be overstated.

A friend had his garage burned down where he stored his cordless mower!

Luckily the fire brigade got there before it had spread to the house!

Reminds me of the Tricolor in 2002 that was carrying a load of nice cars. Why is it always expensive cars on board? Never a load of cheapies. Maybe that doesn't make such good news.

There was also another case when a UPS cargo plane carrying lithium batteries developed an in flight fire and the resulting smoke caused the cockpit to fill with smoke.

The plane travelling from Dubai to Cologne hit the ground north of Dubai.

And of course the initial problems with the lithium ion batteries in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner .

There is a line of thought that the Malaysian aircraft that crashed and has yet to be found was carrying a cargo of these batteries too, certainly would be a better explanation than some of those being discussed.

There is a line of thought that the Malaysian aircraft that crashed and has yet to be found was carrying a cargo of these batteries too,.

It would be interesting to know how that caused the huge change in flight direction ?
