Getting insurance in own name when a named driver - Andy Jones
Hi. Does anybody have the experience of getting car insurance in their own name when they have only been a named driver? Can you claim any NCD? Tried the existing insurer and they didn’t do it. So would another insurer make allowance for NCD when there has been no claims for years.

Son had difficulties with change of car to his own name.

Went to a local broker - he got cover with the same insurer via the broker.

Generally speaking NCD is personal to the policyholder. You cannot earn it as a named driver (though IIRC Direct Line will give you something similar).

There are though plenty of 'starter discounts' and other offers available. My partner was in her late thirties having held a licence from 17 before she insured in her own name. Had previously driven on her parents' policies, her exe's and then mine. Broker got her cover at similar cost to that I was paying at time - we were both public sector professionals at time.

When I opted out of the company car scheme, I was a named driver on my wife's Aviva policy. They did me a deal where they gave me a discount equivalent to maximum NCD.

If I left at the end of year 1, they'd provide a letter confirming 1 years NCD

If I left at the end of year 2 (or later), the letter would be maximum NCD.

Seemed a decent offer to me.

Edited to add, when I later bought myself an MX-5, they simply mirrored my existing full NCD across to it.
