My daughter is being targeted by an accident fraudster - how should we proceed?

My son's girlfriend has owned her SEAT Ibiza from new for the last four years. She has been insured with More Than for the last two and has seven years NCB. Her renewal was due on 29 October and documentation arrived early in October as expected. Then, one week before renewal, she was sent notification from the claims department, that a third party alleged her vehicle to have been involved in an incident at 13:25 on Friday 5 October.

The letter clearly assumes she is guilty, as the tone is "you have failed to notify us of this incident". She had to look up this location on a map, as its some 50 or 60 miles from home and she has never driven there. Her car cannot have been there either, as it was parked near Chelsfield Rail Station from before 8am until after 6pm.

The following day, 6 Oct, she was given a parking ticket by Bexley Council. This would prove that the front of her car was undamaged and therefore could not have been involved, as the TP claims to have been hit in the rear. On my instruction she phoned the claim company on both the 29 and 30 October to advise them this TP claim was fiction and asked them to sort it out.

By this time the renewal premium, which has inflated by 70 per cent has automatically been direct debited twice within four days of the renewal date, causing her financial distress. In the last few days she received by email addressed to an incorrect surname and a request for details that have already been provided. I advised her not to reply, as the whole matter stinks of a ‘crash for cash’ scam. What is her best course of action?

Write back to More Than demanding to know who has accused her of this damage because you wish to report them to the police for criminal fraud. State that you demand the identification of this crook so that you can commence both criminal action for fraud and civil action for libel against him. Pursue this to the end. Recently a man attempting this fraud was sentenced to nine months in prison.
