Insurance company won't cover flood damage

My son drove onto a flooded section of road when a nearby river broke its banks. The engine on his Peugeot 307 stopped and he and the car had to be recovered by the RAC. A number of other drivers found themselves in the same position.

On making a claim to his insurance company he was told that an engineer had inspected the car and no water damage had been found and in fact the engine had seized due its high mileage(170,000). Quite a coincidence I would say.

What would your advice be on what he should do next? Also he has paid for a courtesy car on his policy and has great difficulty in getting to work without a car.

Yes, quite a coinicidence. Basically the insurer is saying it will not replace a 170,000 mile engine with a new one, so is more likely to write off the car at a value consistent with its 170,000 miles than to replace the engine.

The accepted advice is that driving through floods should be avoided. If it is felt necessary then a low gear should be selected, slip the clutch and keep revs up to avoid water being taken into the exhaust....
