Skoda Octavia vRS Review 2024

Skoda Octavia vRS At A Glance

4/5
Honest John Overall Rating
Available as a hatch or estate, the Skoda Octavia vRS is a brilliant all-rounder, but it might lack the sparkle that some want from a hot hatch.

+Decent choice of engines. Spacious cabin. Practical and easy to live with.

-Sharper handling rivals. Lacks drama. Some elements of the interior could be better.

On average it achieves 0% of the official MPG figure

The Skoda Octavia vRS doesn't deliver the same white-knuckle ride as something like the Honda Civic Type R, but if you're looking for a hot hatch that's practical and easy to live with day in, day out, then it could be the car for you. Find out more in our Skoda Octavia vRS review.

The fourth-generation Skoda Octavia vRS is the hot hatch version of one of our favourite family cars, the ever-popular Octavia

Skoda's always done things a little differently when it comes to hot hatches though. Who remembers the original diesel-powered Fabia vRS? And it's a similar story with the Octavia vRS. Not only is it available as a hatchback, but the Octavia is also available as an estate to make it even more family-friendly.

To differentiate the Octavia vRS from the standard car, both incarnations feature unique front and rear bumper designs that incorporate a host of black details. These include the double-slat radiator grille, lower air diffuser and the distinctive air curtains above the front fog lights. The door mirror housings and window frames are also finished in gloss black, while the estate model is finished with black roof bars as standard. At the rear, the hatch model adds gloss black aero flaps, diffuser and a subtle bootlid spoiler, while both models come with chrome exhaust tailpipes and bespoke vRS badging as standard.

Skoda reckons the styling of the Octavia vRS is both sporty yet subtle. It's certainly not as outrageous as something like a Civic Type R, and whether that's a good or a bad thing will be down to your hot hatch checklist. Given that Honda's had to tone down the latest Civic Type R design to appeal to a broader audience, the understated styling might work in the Octavia vRS's favour.

As well as offering two body styles, the Octavia is available with three engines - a 245PS 2.0-litre petrol, a 200PS 2.0-litre diesel and a 245PS plug-in hybrid. The big seller is likely to be the petrol engine variant partnered with the DSG gearbox (there's a six-speed manual available as well), but it looks like the PHEV has been less of a success, now no longer available to order new.

The latest Skoda Octavia vRS enjoys a Virtual Cockpit instrument panel fitted as standard and offers an additional Sport layout. This complements the large 10-inch touchscreen display, though we're not huge fans on the over reliance of touchscreen controls. On the plus side, the new multifunction three-spoke leather steering wheel features physical controls that are definitely easier to use than the touch-sensitive interface on the latest Golf GTI

Speaking of which, the Octavia vRS uses a longer wheelbase than the Golf GTI, resulting in ample space in both the front and back. Meanwhile, the boot space is epic at 600 litres, while the estate goes one better at 640 litres.

It might not be the last word in hot hatches, but the Skoda Octavia vRS makes for a brilliant family car and a great all-rounder.

We lived with an Octavia vRS for six months - find out how we got on with it in our Skoda Octavia vRS long term test.

Skoda Octavia vRS handling and engines

Driving Rating
The Skoda Octavia vRS isn't as focused as some other hot hatches like the Civic Type R (or the Golf GTI for that matter), but find yourself on a good, clear bit of road and it's still a car that will put a smile on your face.

Skoda Octavia vRS 2024: Handling and ride quality

Unlike the standard car, the Octavia vRS sits some 15mm lower and come with quicker steering. Plump for the petrol car and you also get an electronically controlled limited-slip differential (LSD) that means the front tyres really grip the road and pull you out of a bend.

With the extra power of the engine, these tweaks make the car a sharper drive point-to-point, with more control and plenty of grip. Not only does this make the Skoda Octavia vRS perfectly at home pootling round town and covering lots of motorway miles, but it also makes it great fun on a open B-road. You might be tempted to go for the DSG automatic gearbox, and to be fair it changes gear smoothly and quickly, but we'd save some money (and weight) and go with the six-speed manual gearbox as it's that bit more engaging.

The Skoda Octavia vRS has a choice of four driving models (Eco, Normal, Sport and Individual) which alters the responsiveness of the gearbox and throttle, as well as the weight of the steering. A recommended optional extra is the Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC). These adjustable dampers either stiffen or soften the car depending on the driving mode, with the Individual mode providing a 15-stage range that you can dial in to suit you.

When you're not attacking a country road, the Skoda Octavia vRS is perfectly at home on a long motorway drive, with the car coming with active cruise control as standard, with the car braking and accelerating depending on the speed of the traffic in front. If you want adaptive lane assist you'll want the optional Travel Assist pack that includes this and traffic sign recognition, predictive adaptive cruise control and traffic jam assist.

Skoda Octavia vRS 2024: Engines

While the likes of the Golf GTI and Hyundai i30N have the choice of different power outputs from one engine, the Skoda Octavia vRS does things a little differently, with the choice of three engines. There's the choice of either a petrol, diesel or a plug-in hybrid.

Our pick would be the 245PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol with the six-speed manual gearbox. It'll hit 62mph in 6.8 seconds (6.7 seconds if you spec the DSG gearbox) and has a top speed of 155mph. While the power figure might seem a bit light compared to some 300PS+ hot hatches, it's a very flexible engine and has a maximum torque of 370Nm. Don't expect a load of pops and bangs that are the signature of some hot hatches, the 2.0-litre engine in the Octavia vRS is not quite as dramatic, though there's still a decent engine note from it when you're in Sport mode.

A diesel engine in a hot hatch might not seem a natural fit, but the Skoda Octavia vRS with a 200PS 2.0-litre diesel is worth considering if you do a lot of miles. DSG-only, it's only a little slower than the petrol version from 0-62mph, taking 7.4 seconds (though the 4WD version is a bit quicker at 6.8 seconds). More impressively is the 400Nm of torque available.

Then there's the plug-in hybrid version. It's no longer available to order new (or at least at the time of writing), but it pairs a 1.4-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 245PS. With an electric-only range of up to 39 miles, the Octavia vRS iV (as it's known) gets from 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds. It's matches the diesel for torque, but perhaps most appealing is the fact that it's 2.2 seconds quicker from 50-70mph.

Skoda Octavia vRS 2024: Safety

The standard Skoda Octavia was awarded a five-star Euro NCAP rating when it was crash tested back in 2019. Compared to the started car, the Octavia vRS gets even more safety kit, making it an even safer option.

There's a full complement of airbags, lane assist and automatic emergency brakes, though blind spot warning is an optional extra. There's also two ISOFIX points on the outer rear seats and matrix LED headlights.

Skoda Octavia vRS 2024: Towing

The diesels are the ones to go for if you want to tow. The standard Octavia vRS diesel has a maximum braked trailer towing weight of 1600kg, while the four-wheel drive variant is up to 2000kg.

Engine MPG 0-62 CO2
TDI 200 - 6.8–7.4 s 130–145 g/km
TSI 245 - 6.7–6.8 s 157 g/km
vRS 2.0 TDI 200 DSG 4x4 Estate - 6.8 s 147 g/km
vRS 2.0 TDI 200 DSG Estate - 7.4 s 132 g/km

You're not going to find a more practical hot hatch, while there are no complaints about the interior quality. It's just a shame there's too much reliance on the touchscreen.

Skoda Octavia vRS 2024: Practicality

One of the main things that separates the Octavia vRS from the hot hatch competition (and its VW Group sibling, the Golf GTI for that matter), is just how practical it is.

There's bags of space up front for two adults, but we'd like the seat to be positioned a little lower to make you feel a little more cocooned within the cabin. It's a minor quibble though and the seats themselves provide a good amount of lateral support, though they might not be a snug as some might like. They've also been tastefully designed, with some subtle 'vRS' branding diamond-stitching and small neck-height cut outs to make it feel a little less cramped and hemmed in in the back.

In the back and there's ample space for a couple of adults and for short journeys you'll be able to squeeze someone on the middle seat. Headroom and legroom are great, while those opting for the estate version will find it a little more airy than the hatch thanks to the larger opening of the rear windows. It's easy to get in and out of as well, with the rear doors opening nice and wide - great if you're having to regularly lean in to fasten children's seatbelts or hoover out breadstick crumbs that have lodged themselves down the back of the seat somehow.

Where the Skoda Octavia vRS really scores is with the boot. Before we even get to the estate version, the hatchback Octavia vRS provides 600 litres of boot space. That's over 220 litres more than a Golf GTI, but even more impressive is the size of the vRS estate boot. At 640 litres the boot of the Octavia vRS estate is even more practical than the hatchback, while the footprint off it makes it a very useful load carrying space. If you're swayed by the PHEV version of the Octavia vRS estate it's worth noting that the boot space drops to 490 litres due to the extra space needed for the batteries.

Skoda Octavia vRS 2024: Quality and finish

Compared to the model it replaces, the quality of materials used inside the Octavia vRS is a welcome step up. There's some nice soft-touch finishes present, including Alcantara trim running across the dashboard that's complemented by some pleasing red stitching. You'll also find some matt carbon fibre-effect flourishes elsewhere, though there's still some harder plastics used round the cabin if you look a little closer. Overall though you're not feeling short-changed for the price.

The Skoda Octavia vRS also feels nicely bolted together as well, with no creaks, dodgy panel gaps or ill-fitting parts of the vRS's trim to compromise the solid impression the car gives.

Skoda Octavia vRS 2024: Infotainment

The new Skoda Octavia vRS gets a big overhaul when it comes to infotainment tech. Out go physical dials in favour of a 10.25-inch digital instrument display. As well as having a unique sporty display that separates it from the standard car, you can also mirror the car's sat-nav.

If you're planning on using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (both standard on the Skoda Octavia vRS), it's worth noting that it won't mirror your device's preferred mapping app. You'll still be able to get a realtime map displayed in the middle of the dash, but don't expect any route guidance here - you'll have to glance over at the 10-inch infotainment display to follow Google Maps for instance. It's not something unique to the Octavia vRS, with premium brands like Audi suffering from the same issue.

The 10-inch infotainment display is positioned centrally and high up on the dashboard. While not angled towards the driver, it's easy to glance at when you're on the move and the clarity is excellent.

As is the trend on most modern VW Group cars, the 10-inch touchscreen acts as your gateway to most of the Octavia vRS's functions and controls. Luckily it feels a bit more logically laid out than the one in the Golf GTI and it's nice and responsive. That said, it's still a faff to change things like the climate control when you're on the move.

The steering wheel on the Octavia vRS is also better than the one of the Golf GTI as well, with actual physical buttons and tactile scroll wheels as opposed to the frustratingly cumbersome touch-sensitive controls on its German sibling.

As well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, there's also DAB radio and for audiophiles you can upgrade the stereo to a 610W Canton system with 12 speakers and a subwoofer in the boot.

Skoda Octavia vRS value for money

Value for Money Rating
More affordable than many of its rivals, the Skoda Octavia vRS is very good value and it should be pretty easy on the wallet to run as well for a hot hatch.

Skoda Octavia vRS 2024: Prices

New prices for the Skoda Octavia vRS start at £33,945 for the 2.0-litre petrol hatchback with a manual gearbox (you'll pay a little more at £35,175 for the estate version). A DSG 2.0-litre diesel version will set you back a bit more at £35,570 (£36,840 for the estate) and the 4x4 version more again at £37,055 (£38,285). At the moment, the PHEV version is unavailable to order.

How does that compare to the hot hatch benchmark, the Golf GTI? With a starting price of £36,800 it's almost £3000 more than the Octavia vRS and doesn't offer anywhere near the same space.

If you're looking to buy used and while you'll find previous generation cars to suit most budgets, this fourth generation model has only been on sale for a couple of years and as such, you'll be doing well to find a nice used example under £27,000.

Skoda Octavia vRS 2024: Running Costs

With petrol, diesel or PHEV engines to choose from, you should be able to find a vRS to suit your needs. Opt for the petrol and you can expect a little over 40mpg in normal driving, while the diesel delivers 55mpg. The premium you pay over the petrol and the high premium you pay for diesel at the pumps means you're going to need to cover lots of miles regularly to recover the extra cost.

The plug-in hybrid is rather optimistically quoted as 253mpg, but you'll need to charge the battery regularly to get anywhere near that figure. Drain the battery and you'll be struggling to match the mpg from the petrol car.

For a hot hatch the doesn't fair too badly when it comes to insurance, with Skoda Octavia vRS starting in insurance group 24 (for either the diesel or PHEV) and nudging up to group 25 for the petrol.

Expect to pay £165 VED per year currently, though the PHEV will be a bit cheaper by £10. If you do go crazy with the options and spec a vRS over £40,000, then you could end up paying an extra £355 per year for five years (from the second time its taxed).

Skoda Octavia vRS models and specs

Whether it's a hatchback or estate, the Octavia vRS differentiates itself from the standard car with some sharp looking 19-inch alloy wheels and some revised front and rear bumpers for a more aggressive, imposing look. The Octavia vRS is also available is some exclusive colours (phoenix orange and viper green anyone?) that aren't an option on the standard car.

The Skoda Octavia vRS comes with a pretty comprehensive list of features, including aluminium pedals, heated sports seats, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, auto lights and an electrically operated boot. We'd recommend spec'ing Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) at £995. This adapts the suspension using electrically controlled dampers - you can set it for comfort or firm up the ride when pushing on, while the steering response also changes.

Skoda has added a third powertrain option to its new Octavia vRS line-up with the introduction of a new 2.0 TDI model priced from £32,260.

The Octavia vRS 2.0 TDI features the most powerful diesel engine ever offered in a vRS model with a peak power output of 200PS – a 16PS increase over the outgoing model. Power is delivered to the wheels via a seven-speed DSG gearbox.

The all-wheel-drive system – which is available on the vRS 2.0 TDI 200PS DSG 4x4 model distributes power via a new, electronically controlled sixth-generation multi-plate clutch.

In terms of design, the diesel-powered Octavia vRS models are identical to their petrol and iV plug-in hybrid siblings. Both hatch and estate models feature unique front and rear bumper designs that incorporate a host of black details.

These include the double-slat radiator grille, lower air diffuser and the distinctive air curtains above the front fog lights. The door mirror housings and window frames are also finished in gloss black, while the estate model is finished with black roof bars as standard.

At the rear, the hatch model adds gloss black aero flaps, diffuser and a subtle boot lid spoiler, while both models come with chrome exhaust tailpipes and bespoke vRS and iV badging as standard.

Inside, the new vRS combines sportiness with comfort and a generous quota of technology. The new multifunction three-spoke leather steering wheel is equipped with DSG paddles and new knurled wheels in a chrome design.

The heated front sports seats feature integrated headrests and are upholstered in black fabric while a black headlining further enhances the sophisticated interior ambience. The new seats, along with the steering wheel, armrests and Alcantara-padded instrument panel all bear the famous vRS logo and distinctive red stitching. Carbon optic decorative strips, LED ambient lighting and aluminium pedals complete the vRS’s interior design package.

Other technologies fitted as standard include full LED Matrix headlights with AFS (adaptive front light system), Adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking sensors with manoeuvre assist.
