  • 56 plate Astra Life 1.6 petrol auto - Autobox problem. 19 Jul 2014 (Forum)
coolant into oil circuit. Car driven minimal distance since and will go into 2nd or 4th but not 3rd. 1500. At 68 I am old world car savvy but have never worked on this model. Is it worth using Radweld say and draining and refilling gearbox? I asked son to check engine coolant level
  • All - E10 -not a boring government form but new biofuel 12 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Seems the Government is keen on introducing E10 biofuel.  Thats 10% Ethanol mixed with regular unleaded.  My question is does anyone have any idea if their old car will run on this stuff? Or will it dissolve the fuel system from within?  Cos I don't. A bit

  • Lexus - When does it make sense to buy new ? 29 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I wasnt intending to buy new. I was looking for a 1 or 2 year old car so i dont take the full hit with depreciation. However I got a letter from my Lexus dealer offering me £4000 off any new model. I took this to another Lexus dealer who also said, without hesitation, they would match it. The car
  • Rover 25 214 manual 8 Nov 2006 (Forum)
My daughter's car is suffering severe problems in attempting to move away after starting. If it was an old car you could simply pull the choke out. It is just as if it is going to cut out when the accelerator is depressed and it only gets better when the engine is warm. An independent Rover
  • Old Charade 12 Dec 2005 (Forum)
My mums Daihatsu Charade (1992) has now done 59K. This was my fathers last car and therefore has has a lot of sentimental value. In the last 13 yrs it has only had 2 oil changes, 2 rear exhaust boxes and a couple of sets of tyres - nothing else. It's never failed to start or broken down and always
  • Servicing Costs! 26 Mar 2005 (Forum)
the old boy has used for years) and he did the whole job for £350. I picked up the car this morning and he spent about 1/2 hour showing me all of the old parts that he had replaced and then got the car on the ramps and showed me all of the work he had done and let me have a really good poke about. Also
  • Garage just replaced two month old springs - mad 3 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Booked the car in at a garage I have never used before but is in the good garage scheme for two new front springs. I agreed the price and let them get on with the work. Just went to pick up my car and saw two brand new looking but slightly soild rear springs of a Corsa on the floor. My heart sank
  • Rethinking PCP's. 15 Aug 2017 (Forum)
Regarding PCP's on used cars I'm often struggling to talk people out of what is in reality poor value for money. For example. An old customer of mine seeking a replacement for her 2007 Ford Fiesta asked me to recommend something suitable and I found a very nice 16 plate Fiesta 1.25 (82PS) Zetec
  • oil for older or clasic cars 6 Oct 2023 (Forum)
Item I have just read about oil for older classic cars and why modern oil appears to be dangerous. Situated on a site that you would not normally expect to find it on. The author is writing about the good old US of A, but comments cover GB as well. http://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2010/11
  • Young children, car seats and seat belts 4 May 2015 (Forum)
I wonder if anyone can clarify this situation. We have a nearly 4 year old grandaughter, who uses a child's car seat. The original straps are now too short for her so we secure her into the seat using the standard seat belt. Is this legal? Thanks.
  • Alternatives to DSG Gearbox 8 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Just out of interest for my next car in a couple of years time, I will be considering an auto. I likely the DSG gearbox. However the reliability issues put me off, especially when I will be looking to purchase a car 5 years or more old due to budget. So wonder what the alternatives
  • Mechanical sympathy. 3 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Apart from myself does anyone use their cars performance, but treat it with care. Not holding the car on a slope with the clutch instead of doing a hill start, waiting at traffic lights with foot on clutch instead of handbrake and neutral, violent last minute braking. Driving over kerbs
  • Lamborghini - The most expensive car to run - 17k per month... 13 Feb 2009 (Forum)
On another discussion forum with something to do with heads, there is a 4 month old car advertised /sales/892916.htm which cost 163k and is up for sale, with 1,600 on the clock for 95k. Ouch. Don't buy a Lamborghini Spyder if you want to save money...

  • Most rust prone cars? 29 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Can I just ask everybody what their nominations would be for cars they have owned in the past that seemed to attract rust? Mine would be by far and away my old Austin Maestro (don't laugh), which went from looking respectable to garden shed like in the space of a year. Looking at the state of all
  • Petrol cars - Spark plug - longevity, and gap 31 Dec 2021 (Forum)
that.  Perhaps that's why the coil pack failed a couple of years ago.  Anyway, they are staying in for now, as the 21yr old car might not survive beyond the next MoT in March.
