  • Fuel efficiency of older diesel cars 8 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I was looking up the fuel efficiency for older diesel cars for city driving and on a site selling old LTI fairway taxis I came up with a figure of 25 - 30mpg in town for a 2.7 litre diesel. Now I don't know if this means stop and start traffic driving or driving at 30 MPH, but this is roughly
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - buying e46 330d sport 17 Feb 2008 (Forum)
My current car has died (see thirst for coolant on technical) and need a new (to me) car. I have always wanted a 330d (see post over two years old) and am taking this opportunity to get one (03,04 e46 204bhp sport with some spec). Am I mad?? newer cars don't seem to have a feeling of quality
  • cars with *clearly defined* lifespans 15 Jan 2007 (Forum)
some old boy had kept in a garage and only used in the dry.. But it seemed as though over a 2 year period 99% went to the scrapper. It had me wondering about other cars of that era and others more modern. Anyone aware of other cars with seemingly such a *well defined* natural life?
  • Cheap but Safe 4 Aug 2005 (Forum)
economical (diesel or petrol is fine) and cheap to run. Just looking at a couple of second hand car supermarkets, it looks like you can pick up and old astra/vectra/focus/mondeo for somewhere near £3k, but all have mileage around the 80k+ mark and most are about 5 years old. I'm hesitant to advise
  • Amusing result of reporting un-taxed car 23 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I have a neighbour who is a VERY annoying trader-without-premises. Basically, he buys cars at the local auction, chavs them up a bit and then flogs them off in (I presume) Autotrader. He usually has about 6+ cars abandoned in various places around our estate, so every time he abandons one near my
  • Peugeot 306 - Buying an old used one! 26 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I have just had a garbled message form daughter that I have been detailed off to give a used Peugeot 306 Diesel the once over on behalf of her boyfriend who is useless! I have printed out the car by car breakdown from the HJ site so can see the recurring bits and bobs - so happy
  • Hyundai Accent; good value? 25 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Hi, Just wondering what people thought of the (old-style) Accent? I was looking around for cars around the 1000-1500 mark, and the vehicles from the bigger firms (Nissan, VW, Ford etc) were all quite old, you'd be talking a K or L reg which is getting on a bit now. However with the Accent I saw
  • Pickup? 28 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Hi I'm in-between cars and have we just purchased a new house that requires refurbishing. Rather than fill a new car with plasterboard and old bathroom suites I?ve decided to buy a used pickup for up to around £2.5k. Any recommendations, or ones to avoid? Thanks
  • 306 Spare Wheel 3 Mar 2003 (Forum)
The spare wheel "holder" under the car cannot be released as the screw and nut mechanism is rusted solid. The car is 8 years old and looks like it has never been used. I've tried oil and WD40 but to no avail. Anybody got any ideas?
  • Lexus LS400 25 Oct 2002 (Forum)
The Lexus LS400 is a very nice car and I would like one but scanning through autotrader the cheapest examples are around £4,000 and for that you get a 10 year old car with 130k ish on the clock. Good but way overpriced in the current market would you not agree?
  • old HJ 23 Mar 2023 (Forum)
I miss the time when there was a motoring pull out from HJ in the Telegraph on a weekend, the driving tips from the expert, was it Paul Ripley?,  were great. The car reviews and readers problems answered were so interesting. Once HJ's section was left to fade away it was followed by me
  • 1986 Daihatsu Skywing - Filler on (OLD) production vehicles? 1 Nov 2021 (Forum)
is going to kill the car anyway (current favorite: no high beam, a definite inspection fail) I'm a bit surprised though. Doesn't seem a very mass-production thing, even for this low-volume in global terms Taiwan-only vehicle.

  • '05 1.4l Ford Fiesta, 20k miles, - Engine tinckling? Pre-ignition? 8 Aug 2014 (Forum)
Had this car for 6 years and last 6 months have experienced a very, almost inaudable,  quiet 'tinkling', like pre-ignition of old. Happens only when high gear, low speed, throttle 'tickled'. Serviced recently and although advised of problem they didn't find anything. Ditched supermarket

I know this may sound a bit anal but......... I have a Y reg 1.0 3 dr Yaris and I'm looking to replace it with a newer Yaris. Now the little 1.0 is just about OK pushing my car along, but have the newer models gained weight over the years?.  I just took a test drive
  • Aftermarket petrol treatment? 11 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Been driving my father's car around this week.  Its a 2.5 year old Daihatsu Sirion Automatic with only 8,800miles on it.  It drives really well, but starting is not quite as instant as it once was.  I intend to consider the battery as well, but I wonder if it could do with some
  • Skoda Octavia Combi 1.6mpi auto - opinions... 8 Nov 2011 (Forum)
Hello All, Im looking at a low mileage (30k miles) 2008 one of these with the old 8v engine mated to a 6 speed autobox. I know its very old school technology from the engine viewpoint, but maybe thats in its favour. My main buying criteria is reliability, followed by economy
  • Changing a headlight bulb - the easy way 8 Jan 2009 (Forum)
. I pulled in, and opened the bonnet in trepidation....... Five minutes later, involving removing the old bulb, going into the shop and buying a new bulb (£2.95) fitting the new bulb and closing the bonnet, I was driving away perfectly legally. Why can't all cars be like that.
